Andrew Smith (zoologist)

Dr. Sir Andrew Smith (December 3, 1797 – August 12, 1872) was a Scottish surgeon and zoologist.
Smith was born in Hawick. He began his professional life as a ship's surgeon. He was stationed at the Cape Colony from 1820 to 1837, during which time he led a scientific expedition into the interior. He wrote Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa (1838-50).
In 1825 the Governor of the Cape Colony, Lord Charles Somerset, nominated Smith as the first Superintendent of the South African Museum in Cape Town.
Smith returned to the United Kingdom in 1837. During the Crimean War he was Director-General of the British Medical Services, retiring in 1858.
