[edit] Linking to Flash-requiring site and Alfakim/Albotim

This is a continuation of an archived discussion. See User talk:Alfakim/Archive2#Linking to Flash-requiring site and Alfakim/Albotim

Thanks for taking this up Armedblowfish it's really appreciated. I don't get it though... should I now continue to linkspam the official site? -- Alfakim -- talk 13:05, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem. I guess so, though "linkspam" is not really an accurate term. I looked at WP:EL, the style guide Naconkantari cited. Apparently, it is more acceptable to link to plain HTML pages that then link to rich media, so I propose switching to the front page (which offers links to high and low bandwidth version, and a download of Flash). I also suggest directly citing WP:EL and why this is acceptable in the comment. You may also consider a brief explanation in your edit summary. (Note: I also looked for a non-Flash mirror, but could not find one.):
 == External links ==
* [http://www.stargatesg1.com/ Official Stargate SG-1 site]. MGM. Visited June 8,
2006. Most of site requires [[Flash]]. <!-- There is a synopsis of the episode in there, but it cannot
be linked to directly to our knowledge. Though the URL above contains links to the rest of the site
(which is Flash), it itself is not Flash, in accordance with WP:EL. Even if it were, it is acceptable
because it is a) the official Stargate site and b) being used as a reference. -->

[edit] About vandalizing...

I find this whole situation amusing. I haven't been vandalizing Wikipedia, and I didn't leave a message "I am not vandalizing! Stop talking to me!" on whatever that page is. I don't understand why my IP address (I assume that that's my computer, so correct me if I'm wrong) is leaving vandalism. I've never edited any of those pages I keep getting scolded about! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.226.18.30 (talkcontribs) 16:24 15 June 2006 (UTC).

I was just letting them know where I stood. Even though the desision to delete (inspite of the original results) was upheld, I wanted them to know that I had not been swayed. It is my regretful task to inform you that your recent request for adminship failed to achieve consensus to promote, and has been closed. Please do not be discouraged; a number of users have had their first RfA end without consensus, but have been promoted overwhelmingly in a later request. Please continue to make outstanding contributions to Wikipedia, and consider requesting adminship again in the future. You may find Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship helpful in deciding when to consider running again. If I can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate to ask. [edit] your edit to DNA Resequencer

Hi, I just reverted the edit you made to DNA Resequencer. Although your edit agruably upgraded the text, It Deleted 3 refs, detsoyed about 20 cites, and disolved sevral pieces of key info. I like what you added and how yo restructured the intro to the article, however it messed up alot of other things so I reverted. Later I will try to incoperate your changes to the text without damaging the refs. Tobyk777 18:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

S .. took me ages to do all that work. Could you re-revert to the version I did? and then sort out the refs from there? I thought the work i did on that intro was pretty crucial, especially if you're looking for FA. --Alfakim-- talk 23:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
I liked the work you did. Tonight, I have some time. I will try to re incorperate it. Just wait 6 hours from when i'm posting it. I appericiate all the work you did. I will try to make it perfect. Tobyk777 00:45, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
I just spent more than an hour. The text is perfect, and all the cites are in the right places, however, the refs are really screwed up. Because of it alot of the text is invisible. I know it has something to do with the ref tags but I can't figure out what. Tobyk777 03:26, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Take a look now

I have incorperated my great refs with your text. With the help of Tango and Morph, it looks perfect. Is there anything else that you think could be improved. Tobyk777 23:24, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

The article needs copyediting heavily, it is riddled with spelling and grammatical mistakes :S. Also, your new leadin has introduced elements I tried to remove, such as those going into too much detail or sounding OR, or most importantly being in-universe. I would appreciate it if you could revert as significantly as possible to the version I wrote which removed 99% of what FA guys would object to. for isntance, your descriptions of various events (e.g. anubis and the goauld) in the leadin are far too detailed and in-universe. --Alfakim-- talk 01:26, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
I copied all of your text into the curent version. I just re-reffed it, and re-added info you deleted. I didn't revert because your changes were bad, I reverted because they destroyed the refs and deleted info. The text in your version was the best the text ever was, (except for the info you deleted) If you could copyedit it without destoying refs and deleting info it would be great. Tobyk777 02:53, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
If you take a look here and here the text in the current version is almost identical to your text, I tried to preserve as much as possible. It is reverted to the version you wrote, just better refed. (Also, the show never mentioned anything about an army of hokotaurs so i took that out) Your changes were great, I just reffed them. Tobyk777 02:59, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

I removed some of your info because of reasons like:

  • Too much detail for a lead in section
  • Sounded in-universe
  • Repeated elsewhere in teh article

Remember that a leadin is meant to be a brief summary/introduction to an article that doesn't go into detail, and shouldnt take up more than 1 screen. --Alfakim-- talk 14:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template Table

There is something I want to do, but I can't get an answer about how to do it on Wikipedia/MediaWiki sites. I hope you can help: This is best described by example. Consider I have a template named 'house' and it has the fields 'address', 'rooms', 'baths', 'price'. Now, I know how to make that template and use it on each page about a house. But, I want to show the template values of every page in one comparison table, like:

Address Rooms Baths Price
123 St. 3 1.5 $150k
44 Powderhorn Ave. 2 2 $120k
1143 S. Windermere 4 2.5 $200k

Is that possible? I made an extension that does it, but if you update a template value, you have to open/save the page with the comparison table again to update the values. --Kainaw (talk) 17:11, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

There is no way to do this. The best you can get is a list of all the pages which the template is used on, at Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:House.--Alfakim-- talk 00:10, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
OK. I made an extension to do it. Now I can avoid having to update every table of info on my wiki. Just update the template and all the related tables are updated (when the cache clears). --Kainaw (talk) 18:41, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
That is a very clever extension. You should develop it and so on - get it added to Wikipedia i see it being very very useful. --Alfakim-- talk 18:50, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] stargate timeline

Just wanted to say that I think you (and all supporters) did a great job on the timeline page (which I have only just found today). I have one little hitch though and frankly, I am a little afraid of trying to make a note directly on the page for fear of somehow managing to accidently erase the whole thing, so I will use this (safer) route instead.

You note that Dr Weir and the Atlantis research team are examining the ruins of the Antarctic base in July 2004(Rising and prelude to it). Presumably, this would also be when Maj Sheppard flies Gen O'Neill to the site and their little mishap with the drone. It is clearly daytime during this episode yet it should be completely dark in Antarctica in July and NO ONE flies in Antarctica in the winter (just ask Dr Jerri Neilsen - the doctor who discovered she had cancer while stationed at A-S South Pole Station during the winter of 1999! the med drop they did in July for her was unprecedented at the time).

Frankly, I have also wondered exactly what it is that Maj Sheppard would have been doing in Antarctica for eleven months (short of consuming already very limitted resources) seeing as though a)there are no military bases in Antarctica and b)he would only be useful as a helicopter pilot for 4 or 5 months out of the year?? But, that is neither here nor there.

thanks for your time!!!

Umm... thanks! Youve pointed out another plothole - dont worry about it. Anyway yes, glad you liked the page. --Alfakim-- talk 20:00, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Quantum Templating

I'm trying to get some help on a template I was designing. The goal was the condense a few related templates whose only difference is the inclusion or removal of a few fields. I thought it would be simple enough to add some code that would only include the static parts if the corresponding parameter existed.

Unfortunately, the static part in question is a row in a table. As such, it includes a pipe charater. Template code does not like pipe characters where it expects a parameter, and predictably does not do what I want it to do. Is there any way around this, or should I abandon my quest? --Khaim 16:06, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

There are ways around it. Either:
  1. See {{!}}
  2. Use HTML table markup. So inside your template...
{{sdfdsf|dfsdf|sdfsdf|<tr><td align="center">row cell 1</td><td blah>row cell 2</td></tr>|sdfsd|sdfsd}}
--Alfakim-- talk 16:12, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Thank you! {{!}} worked like a charm.
--Khaim 19:11, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:cite visual and Stargate episode citations

Hey, I think {{cite visual}} might actually be better for citing Stargate episodes than {{cite episode}}, because it has more bibliographic information. However, I do think it could use some more variables to make it appropriate for Stargate episodes. For example, a series variable. Also, I am not sure whether MGM would be the "distributor" or "producer", or whether the distributor would be MGM, or a television network / DVD publishing company. The "date" (release date) could also be either the original airdate, or the date the DVD came out. In addition, if the medium chosen is "tv", a "viewed on date" variable could be useful. Anyways, I would appreciate your opinions on what variables would need to be added, and how said variables should be used. Also when I'm done making changes at Template:Template sandbox/Template:Cite visual, I would appreciate it if you looked at my code to see if you catch any bugs that I didn't. (This is assuming you even think it's a good idea.)

The ultimate goal would be to create a list of citations for Stargate episodes, with the variables specific to TV/DVD left blank, so that editors who have seen the episodes can tweak the TV/DVD specific fields, and cite information they have verified with that reference. (If I were to add the citations to the Stargate episode articles, then not having seen most of them, I would have to put them in "Further viewing" sections, not "References" sections.)

Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 03:38, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand. What are you proposing? Cite visual can't replace cite episode because it doesn't cite the episode. Unless you're creating a new, Stargate-focussed or episode-focussed Cite visual? Then what happens to Cite episode? Deprecated? --Alfakim-- talk 18:44, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
{{Cite visual}} is more generic than {{cite episode}} - an episode is a type of visual. I don't mean to create a new cite visual, merely to expand it by adding variables that you would want for an episode (like Stargate). Cite episode would still be there, but if I/we did a good job improving cite visual, perhaps people would gradually stop using it. Some of the things I like about cite visual are that it has more fields for the people involved (director, producer, crew, instead of just credits), it pays more attention to the actual source the editor used (medium - this is good to know for the same reason it's good to know what edition of a book was used), etc. Of course, it lacks some fields you might want for an episode (like a series field). Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 23:56, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Did you see last entry on Template_talk:User_current_age? I tested the template today because I transfered it to tr:wiki and noticed the same error: it is okay for today AND someyear but not for tomorrow AND someyear where it should rather read 11 month and corresponding days: Example:

[edit] Template:No wiki

I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on a template I made. It's like your Nowiki template, except it's for templates. Here's what it does:

Leaving this code when substituted:

  • <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:nowiki|nowiki]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki>

Here's how you use it:

  • Type {{subst:no wiki|TemplateName}} and replace "TemplateName" with the template of your choice.

Here's the page for it: {{no wiki}} (The template I'm talking about was used to make this.)
What do you think? Any suggestions? Take a look at my user page for examples of its use. Chris53516 16:32, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
