Hello,
My full name is Alexander V. Kel'in. I am a professional organic chemist with 16 years 'hands-on' and theory experience. My scientific and practical interests are on the border of organic chemistry and organic electronics. I have particularly extensive experience in the chemistry of thiophenes, pyrroles, furans and related compounds used in organic electronics and as biologically active substances.
Currently, I maintain a website www.oe-chemicals.com (Organic Electronic Chemicals LLC), which is dedicated to broad presentation and popularization of the field of organic electronics as one of the primary parts of the business. I attempted to contribute my knowledge to Wikipedia in the fields of organic electronics and organic chemistry and also started some financial support.
Unfortunately, I've met aggressive behavior of some editors, especially those, who have very little relation, or even idea about articles they try to edit and strip external links under the shield of 'fighting with spam'. I can agree that spam is a serious issue, but I deeply believe, that it can never be solved by that kind of methods and that kind of 'fighters'.
I would like to propose my viewing of radical change of Wikipedia policy that could stop both tendencies in a moment.
STEPS TO REFORM WIKIPEDIA POLICY TO ELIMINATE SPAM AND EDIT WARS
1. What is spam and spammers?
Spam is POOR QUALITY websites linked from Wikipedia, no matter who put the link: established editor, new editor, or outsider. Do not mess with GOOD QUALITY links that were put by outsiders. Article visitors NEED these links to compliment the knowledge! Since all websites are commercial in one or the other way, I see no offence for Wikipedia to link to good quality commercial sites that contribute new information to an article. Even payment can be established.
2. What are the "spam-hunters"?
I don't know. Anyone can check the list. Something horrible. Crazy, angry, I don't know, what else, secret police? This mess should be stopped - the sooner - the better.
STEPS TO PERFORM:
1. Personality issue:
It is absolutely necessary to stop ALL anonymous editions and nicknames. Everyone MUST reveal real names, age, education, occupation and even, possibly, hobby. Editing should be absolutely transparent, clear, and expertise of a contributor should be verifiable. It will be no need to fear "harassment" because everyone knows everyone and may simply apply to regular police.
2. Link and spam issue:
Lets start from the point that:
a). All edition is already transparent. No outsider, or "nicknamer" may edit or put the link.
b). Wikipedia needs GOOD LINKS to remain a great resource. How to get good links and no spam? I propose "peer reviewing" of a link candidate. Since everyone revealed expertise, a search system can be easily established, that performs search of 2-3 experts for a particular link-subject. The automated system should pick randomly. The expert editors vote for or against link before inserting it in an article. The vote is final. If rejected, an applicant may apply again after 0.5 year.
Justice, No spam, No harassment, No wars, That is it.
