Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Baku
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was the main Russian Orthodox cathedral in Baku, Azerbaijan until its destruction with dynamite in 1937 during the Stalin era.
The cathedral - one of a series built across the Russian Empire in honour of Alexander Nevsky - was designed by the Baku-born architect R. R. Marfeld, with Polish-born architect Josef Goslowski working out many of the technical details. The cathedral was completed in 1898.
Other places of worship - including the city's Catholic church and a number of mosques - were also destroyed during the Soviet anti-religious persecution of the 1930s.
Located not far from City Hall, the site where the Nevsky Cathedral once stood is now occupied by the Bulbul School of Music.
