Africa Nazarene University

Africa Nazarene University is a liberal arts university located in Ongata Rongai, Kenya. The school is affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene. It is the first Nazarene liberal arts university outside of the United States.
ANU is located on almost 100 acres in the midst of the vast Maasai Plains across the Nairobi National Park from the city of Nairobi.

In 1985 Church of the Nazarene leaders began discussions with the Kenyan Commission for Higher Education. This commission, after hearing the church's proposals, recommended the church start a liberal arts university. In 1987 Nazarene missionary Dr. Harmon Schmelzenbach coordinated the purchase of 70 acres of land in the Maasai Plains.
In January of 1990 at the recommendation of the Commission for Higher Education the Africa Nazarene University Trust was organized with a board of trustees. On November 23, 1993 after three years of preparing a proposal for the University the Commission for Higher Education granted a Letter of Interim Authority to operate a University. This meant that ANU was the first university to seek a charter under the Kenya 1985 Universities Act.
The school began operations in August of 1994 with sixty three students. The school now enrolls almost a thousand students.
On October 8, 2002 Africa Nazarene University received its charter from the Government of Kenya.
ANU has been an affiliate of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities since February of 2002.
