Though the project has yet to go live we only need the support of a few more Wikipedians to do so and hope to do just that soon. This project is meant to expand Wikipedia's catalog of information on Ghost towns using reliable sourcing. This is the temporary project page. Open tasks and other information will be added to the project page if it gathers enough support. If you wish to join, just add your name to Participants at the bottom of this page.

Ghost towns, a blanket category, are basically abandoned towns. There are ghost towns worldwide, and there do not have to be ruins in place for a former town to be a ghost town, it is simply a place where people once lived that they no longer live in. This project seeks to expand Category:Ghost towns and all subcats. Ghost towns worldwide should be included.

[edit] Where to get started

Pick a location. A country, a state in the U.S. anywhere. Focus on that location. Find a reliable source or sources for information. If the sub cat for your location doesn't exist, just create it in the appropriate place. For instance you could create Category:Ghost towns in Iowa in the Category:Ghost towns in the United States.

I started in Texas because it was easy, the Handbook of Texas Online provides a reliable source of information for all things Texas so it was a simple search of that site for information regarding Texas ghost towns. Try an advanced google search in either the .edu or .gov domains for generally reliable info regarding ghost towns. Personally I haven't been using the site ghosttowns.com, mainly because some of the information on the site, when cross-referenced with the Handbook of Texas Online at the University of Texas at Austin, was contradicted.

[edit] Scope

The scope of the project is to expand the existing ghost town categories and to create new categories that don't exist, worldwide ghost towns could use expansion. As this becomes more formal lists of categories and some lists of articles needing to be created or expanded will pop up. Eventually subcategories including some of the more famous people associated with ghost towns and boom towns should also be created. We will be careful about notability but basically people who come up in discussion about small towns in a particular region on a repeated basis will qualify, as well as some more famous people who already have wikipedia entries, such as Isaac Ellwood.

If there are any requests for specific countrie feel free to post them here or on my talk page and they will be thusly created. I have taken the liberty of creating cats for all the stub tags so anyone who wants to can categorize ghost town stubs. Happy editing and hopefully we can go live soon.
