Oregon in middle school and became the Oregon High School Player of the Year for Sam Barlow High School in Gresham, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. He then went on to play four seasons at the University of Oregon, where, during his senior year, he led the Ducks to the Elite Eight before becoming the 14th pick by the Pacers in the 2002 NBA Draft.

Widely considered to be an underachiever his first three years at Oregon in part due to his tremendous athletic ability, Jones jumped onto the national radar screen as a senior. He was a candidate for Pac-10 Player of the Year honors as a senior at the University of Oregon after averaging 18.6 points per game.
