Os recifes de coral crescem na região fótica de mares tropicais, de forte ação de ondas, forte o suficiente para manter disponível na coluna d´água alimento e oxigêncio dissolvido. Os recifes de coral também dependem de águas rasas, limpas, mornas e pobres em nutrientes para crescer. Os corais são organismos coloniais que em sua maioria constroem esqueletos calcários. Tais esqueletos são responsáveis pela estrutura rochosa chamada recifes de coral.
