Ubiquitin links specific protein to be degraded. E1 protein (PDB code=1r4n) activates ubiquitin (shown in orange, with ATP in red). E1 passes ubiquitin to several specific E2 proteins (1fxt), that link ubiquitin through a cysteine (shown in yellow). E2 associates with specific E3 proteins (1ldk, 1fqv) that bind together the activated ubiquitin and the protein to be degraded (teh exact site is starred) (more details...) |
