Soltsy

Soltsy (Russian: Сольцы́) is a town in the western part of Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located on the Shelon River, 78 km south-west of Velikiy Novgorod. The village was first documentally mentioned in 1390. At that time it was an important point of the trade route between Novgorod and Pskov. In 1471 the Battle of Shelon between Muscovite forces led by Ivan III and the army of the Novgorod Republic took place near the village, which marked the end of political independence of the Novgorod Republic.
The settlement gradually developed, and in 1914 was granted the status of town. Population: 11,264 (2002 Census).
