São Roque (Funchal)

São Roque is a parish in the northern part of the city and a suburb of Funchal in the Madeira Islands. The population in 2001 is 9,274, its density is 1,233.2/km² and the area is 7.52 km². It is located N of Funchal and SSW of Faial. The main industry are businesses and formerly dominated by agriculture. São Roque is connected with a road linking Monte and a road linking Funchal and Faial and to São Martinho and northwest towards Curral das Freiras. The mountains lie to the north and forests mainly of laurisilva about 1.5 km north and further north, grasslands. Farmlands and residential area lies to the south. The parish of Santana is bounded to its north. São Roque is surrounded with two streams, one that is closer to the east and the other is further to the west. São Roque is not connected with the urban sprawl of Funchal. Farmlands used to dominate the area around São Roque. Developments arrived in the mid-20th century and replaced much of the farmlands, empty spaces remain especially to the west.
