Announcing the first Wikipedia Best New Article contest. (More information to come)
Write an article listed on Wikipedia:Requested articles. List the article below. On October 30, a team of judges will decide which is the best article. The author of the best entry will receive a fabulous t-shirt and coffee mug (see prizes below). For articles with multiple contributors, the author is considered to be the first contributor. If you have prizes you are willing to donate to the cause, please list them here; they will be distributed to other excellent entries.
Prizes
- 1st place : 1 wiki t-shirt (any size), 1 wiki coffee mug (to keep awake and editing through the night)
[edit] Criteria
The article should meet the standards of the featured articles.
[edit] Judges
[edit] I need to win, Dan! What do I do?
If there are no articles on requested articles that appeal to you, add an article to the list and write it. Cheating is easy and fun.
[edit] Rules
- At least five articles (by different participants) must be submitted for the contest to take place.
- No copyright violations, please.
[edit] Submissions
[edit] Gaze
If Wikipedia:Recentchanges counts as part of Wikipedia:Requested articles (see [1]), I humbly throw Gaze into the ring. Dysprosia 08:39, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
This is the first non-Beatles song article I've written from scratch into something that's actually decent. Yes, this was on Requested articles (for your convenience, the diff where I removed it). Johnleemk | Talk 19:12, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Deniable encryption
This was on Wikipedia:Requested articles. Decrypt3 20:15, Oct 10, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Bob Kiley
Perhaps not the richest subject for a featured article, but surely I get bonus points for writing an article that appears on Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than a year. In fact it was first requested about twenty months ago - one of very few requests that old still requested today. Pcb21| Pete 20:32, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II
I'll add it to requested later...
[edit] Chromotherapy
This was on Wikipedia:Requested articles/science. Straal 21:06, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Economy of Africa
Almost all mine, but ChrisG has made some good additions. Was listed on the Countering systemic bias requests list. - SimonP 23:15, Oct 12, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Japanese toilet
Not a request, but still a new article from October 8. Sort of announced my interest in the topic on October 1 when Bidet was nominated as a FAC. The Japanese toilet is going through WP:FAC right now now a WP:FA. -- Chris 73 Talk 00:31, Oct 13, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Adna Chaffee
Saw it was requested, so here's my little contribution at making wiki better. GeneralPatton 03:28, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Orthogenesis
Picked from Wikipedia:Requested articles/science, and, having seen Economy of Africa and concluded that the competition was as good as over, I thought I'd try for an honorary mention. At time of listing I may not have entirely finished, I may visit the library and make further additions, will update when I'm done! --Joe D 21:22, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Roberto Matta
I may be new here, but I'm always up for a challenge! I noticed Matta's name in Wikipedia:Requested articles, and whether this is worthy enough for consideration in the contest or not, at least there's something on him in Wikipedia now! Grutness 10:29, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] A Hard Day's Night (song)
Yay, my second entry! I worked hard on this, as sifting through search results that can be about either the movie or the album (as most of them were) is tough work. Johnleemk | Talk 15:23, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Dick Morris
This was on Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Social_Sciences_and_Philosophy. I don't normally write articles from scratch, it was harder than I thought. Good luck everyone! Rhobite 19:39, Oct 14, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] High speed camera
Created article with some help from the german entry. Requested on Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Applied_Arts_and_Sciences --Deelkar 15:24, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Old Swiss Confederacy
Not on requests; but since "cheating" is encouraged, I guess that means that new articles in general qualify... It's the second article of a series-in-the-making on the history of Switzerland, created on October 13, 2004. It will get a picture (a map) soon. Lupo 20:45, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] RTML
Not requested, and I'm not going to bother cheating and putting it there. ~leif 04:35, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Barry Sadler
Well it seems I wrote a requested article without even knowing it. I had no notion whatsoever of entering this contest, but having accidentally fulfilled the criterion I guess there's no reason not to. So here's SSgt Sadler, who I always thought of as a sort of kitchy musician, but I guess there's more to him. Not a great article by any means, but having done the work I might as well throw myself on the old chopping block. Maybe I'll improve this before the judging begins. -R. fiend 05:46, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Star Tours
I did a whole bunch of info culling, mostly reaching back to old newspapers circa the time of the ride's development. I think it is the most informative article on the ride on the Internet. I htink this counts because I wanted to see this article up on the site and so created it myself. Indigoblu 1:57 PM 18, Oct. 2004
[edit] Ottavio Bottecchia
It was not requested, but putting a page that's already written there is a bit silly. --Mixcoatl 15:10, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Game programming
I don't know what the official start date for this contest was, but I wrote this one, though it was requested from Featured Article Candidates. I think its interesting, given how popular video games are these days. — Frecklefoot | Talk 17:38, Oct 20, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Pepsi can stove
Short and sweet.
Duk 18:38, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Frobenius normal form
Since I don't think there's any restriction on the number of articles one can submit, here's Frobenius normal form. (I requested yesterday, I thought I might as well fill it ;) Dysprosia 00:23, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Ethanol fermentation
I notised there was no article on it when researching cellular respiration, so I figured I'd write it and submit it. •→Iñgólemo←• 03:28, 2004 Oct 21 (UTC)
[edit] Stourbridge Lion
Most of my writing here so far is about historical railroad topics in the United States (you can monitor User:Slambo/Trains to see the articles that I create and/or substantially update). I didn't see any requests for railroad history in the list, so I made a request to myself to write an article on an early named steam locomotive. What better candidate than the first locomotive to be operated in the US? slambo 00:56, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Okot p'Bitek
A long-standing requested article on the Ugandan poet, one of the major names in African post-colonial literature. Charles Matthews 09:52, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] The Rape of the Sabines
Article from the "most wanted" list about paintg by Jacques-louis David. However David never painted "The rape of the Sabines". Satanovski 16:26, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- After two days of discussions I can see that from the Rule 2 you, Cyrius, can recognize expression "copyright violations" without slightest idea what are you talking about. Satanovski 07:47, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Communication Moon Relay
I submit this article on the U.S. Navy program of the same name. It was listed on Requested articles as Moon bounce. --Slowking Man 03:17, Oct 24, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Jill Ker Conway
I've seen some great entries in this competition already, I think we 2nd and 3rd prizes ;). Only my second written-from-scratch article, as requested by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias project. -- [[User:Solitude|Solitude\talk]] 10:24, Oct 25, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Genoa 1893
There's one about the football team Genoa 1893 by me. Maybe not too good, but it took ages!!--Ben davison 17:41, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] 2-8-0
Okay, since there isn't a rule against multiple entries, here's another that I requested myself to do. A 2-8-0 is a type of steam locomotive. slambo 01:08, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] EMD BL2
Do I dare enter a third article that I've written? Yes, I dare myself to do so. Here's another railroad locomotive page, this one describes the locomotive model that formed the basis of EMD's wildly successful GP series of locomotives. slambo 02:02, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Ximelagatran
Well, as non-requested (or just self-requested) articles seem to be allowed, I'm renominating this recent pearl of Wikipedia. This substance is a new anticoagulant that is likely to replace the much-maligned warfarin as the principal oral prophylaxis for thrombosis. It also shows the strides that the pharmaceutical Wikiproject has been making in systematically categorising medications. JFW | T@lk 19:40, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] The Randi Rhodes Show
Thowing The Randi Rhodes Show into the mix, 99.995% mine. AdamJacobMuller
[edit] Cozad Singers
I requested this at Wikipedia:Requested articles/music, then wrote it. It is pretty short, but is a start at an area in music that the 'pedia has so far missed. Gentgeen
[edit] Liberal Party (Utah)
This has been a red link for some time, but was not on any requested article list. Had I known about the contest before I made it, I would have "cheated." Cool Hand Luke 21:06, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)
