RMS Titanic (or SS Titanic) was a British passenger ship, built by Harland and Wolff ship builders, in Belfast, for the White Star Line company. At 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912, during Titanic's first voyage, it collided with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. The iceberg bent the Titanic's hull allowing water to flow into the ship. The Titanic sank two hours and forty minutes later at 2:20 AM on April 15. The sinking killed more than 1,500 people and is one of the worst peacetime shipping disasters.
The Titanic disaster changed various shipping laws, including requiring all ships to carry enough lifeboat space for everyone on board. The shipwreck was discovered by a French-American team led by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel on September 1, 1985.
