The Beatles

The Beatles were a popular band who made music in the 1960s. The members of the band were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The band started in Liverpool in England.
The band became very popular all over the world, and they are one of the most influential bands in the history of music - that is, what they did made a big change in the way people make music now. Brian Epstein was their manager. George Martin produced most of their recordings. Almost all of their music was recorded at Abbey Road Studios.
They made thirteen albums and a number of films. They have sold over one billion (1,000,000,000) records, including albums and singles.
They stopped playing together in 1970, because the stress and the fame became too much for the band. They also grew apart as they got older, and they began to want to work with other people. All four members started their own solo careers.
John Lennon was murdered on December 8, 1980, but the other three Beatles got together in the 1990s to make two new records. They used demo recordings of two John Lennon songs, and added their own new parts, so all four members could appear on the songs. The songs were "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love". Paul McCartney was knighted in 1997, as producer George Martin was in 1996. George Harrison died of cancer on November 29, 2001.
