United States presidential election, 2004, in South Dakota

South Dakota is a reliable conservative and Republican state, having voted for Republican nominees in all Presidential election but 1964 since 1940, and George W. Bush easily carried the state, with a margin of victory of more than 20% against his Democratic challenger, John F. Kerry.
However, and unlike most of the nation, South Dakota went more Democratic this year than in 2000. Indeed, Bush had a 23% margin of victory against Al Gore here. Most of Bush's losses can be explained by the heavily turnout of Native Americans, a reliably Democratic group.
