أفرام نعوم تشومسكي (Avram Noam Chomsky) (و. 7 ديسمبر 1928 فيلادلفيا، پنسلفانيا) هو أستاذ جامع مدى الحياة في اللغويات في معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا. هو صاحب نظرية النحو التولدي، والتي كثيراً ما تعتبر أهم اسهام في مجال اللغويات النظرية في القرن العشرين. وقد اسهم كذلك في اشعال شرارة الثورة الإدراكية في علم النفس من خلال مراجعته للسلوك الفعلي لـ ب.ف. سكينر، والذي تحدى المقاربة السلوكية لدراسة العقل واللغة والتي كانت سائدة في الخمسينات. مقاربته الطبيعية لدراسة اللغة أثّرت كذلك على فلسفة اللغة والعقل (انظر هارمان و فودور). ويعود إليه كذلك فضل تأسيس ما أصبح يُعرف بـ تراتب شومسكي، وهي تصنيف للغات الرسمية حسب قدرتهم التولدية.
بالإضافة إلى عمله في اللغويات، فشومسكي معروف على نطاق واسع كناشط سياسي، ولنقده للسياسة الخارجية للولايات المتحدة والحكومات الأخرى. ويصف شومسكي نفسه بأنه اشتراكي تحرري، وكمتعاطف مع التضامنية اللاسلطوية (وهو عضو في نقابة عمال العالم الصناعيين) وكثيراً ما يُعتبر منظراً رئيسياً للجناح اليساري في السياسة الأمريكية.
وحسب فهرس مراجع الفنون والإنسانيات، بين 1980 و 1992 ذكر اسم شومسكي كمرجع أكثر من أي شخص آخر حي، وكثامن شخص على الإطلاق.
