ชาลส์ ดิกคินส์ (Charles John Huffam Dickens – 7 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2355 – 9 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2413) นักประพันธ์ชาวอังกฤษ และมีนามปากกาว่า “โบซ” (Boz) เกิดที่เมืองแลนด์พอร์ท ฮแมเชียร์ อังกฤษใต้ สหราชอาณาจักร เป็นบุตรเสมียนฝ่ายเงินเดือนกองทัพเรือ ในปี พ.ศ. 2357 ดิคคินส์ได้ย้ายมาอยู่ในลอนดอนแล้วย้ายไปอยู่ที่เมืองแชทแธม และที่นี่เขามีโอกาสได้เข้าโรงเรียน และได้ทำงานเป็นเด็กรับใช้ในสำนักงานทนายความชั้นสอง แล้วจึงเริ่มทำงานด้านหนังสือพิมพ์และได้เป็นผู้สื่อข่าวและเข้าทำงานกับหนังสือพิมพ์แห่งหนึ่งในลอนดอนในเวลาต่อมา
ดิคคินส์ ได้ตีพิมพ์บทความเป็นจำนวนมากใน วารสารรายเดือน ตามด้วยเรื่องย่อยและบทความลงในหนังสือพิมพ์กรอบบ่าย อีฟนิงครอนิเกิล ในปี พ.ศ. 2379 เขาได้ตีพิมพ์ เรื่องย่อยโดยโบซ (Sketches by Boz) และ พิควิคเปเปอร์ (Pickwick Papers) และในปีเดียวกันได้แต่งงานกับแคเธอรีนบุตรสาวของเพื่อนชื่อ จอร์จ โฮการ์ท และมีบุตรด้วยกันถึง 10 คน แต่ก็ได้หย่าขาดจากกันเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2401
ชาลส์ ดิคคินส์ เป็นคนทำงานหนักหามรุ่งหามค่ำ ผลิตงานวรรณกรรมรวมทั้งงานเขียนเพื่อณรงค์ต่อต้านความชั่วร้ายในสังคมสมัยนั้นออกมาอย่างสม่ำเสมอเป็นจำนวนมาก และไม่เคยส่งเรื่องช้ากว่ากำหนดเลย ดิคคินส์เริ่มงานวรรณกรรมด้วยการเขียนลงหนังสือพิมพ์รายเดือนโดยเริ่มด้วยเรื่อง โอลิเวอร์ ทวิสต์ (พ.ศ. 2380-2382) นิโคลาส นิคเกิลบี (พ.ศ. 2381-2382) และเรื่อง ดิโอลเคียวริโอซิตีชอพ (พ.ศ. 2383-84) หลังจากนี้ ดิคคินส์ได้ไปใช้ชีวิตส่วนใหญ่ของเขาในต่างประเทศ งานในระยะหลังของเขาได้แก่ เดวิด คอบเปอร์ฟิลด์” (พ.ศ. 2392-93) “บลีกเฮาส์” (พ.ศ. 2395-96) เรื่องของสองนคร (The Tale of Two Cities – พ.ศ. 2402) ความคาดหวังอันยิ่งใหญ๋ (Great Expectation –พ.ศ. 2403-04) และงานเขียนที่ยังไม่จบเรื่อง ความลึกลับของเอดวิน ดรูด (The Mystery of Edwin Drood – พ.ศ. 2413)
