WNYN-LP is the local Azteca America affiliate for New York City. It broadcasts on channel 39. However, they have construction permits that would move the analog signal to channel 49, with channel 39 becoming WNYN's digital signal.

[edit] History

The station started out as W51BV channel 51 from Deer Park, NY in July of 1991 as an affiliate of The Box Music Network. On November 20, 1995, the station expanded to channel 39 in NYC and became WNYN-LP, an LTV affiliate. They continued their operation as The Box on channel 51 in Deer Park, NY as well. In 1997, The Box launched a network of music channel genres. This station became known as Box Pulse. In 2000, they ceased operations on channel 51 without warning, leaving many fans of The Box in the area in the dark. W17CH signed on about a year prior as an additional affiliate for The Box on Long Island. Unfortunately, this station only had a D Grade signal where channel 51 was available and was unwatchable at many times in the area. W17CH operated through late 2001 and became an MTV2 affiliate when The Box merged with MTV2. They ceased programming in mid 2001, and oddly enough, no trace of their existence can be found on the FCC site. The only evidence that they existed can be found in a 2000 document about them applying for Class A status.

One Sunday night in 2001, channel 51 came back on the air for one night with the LTV programming that also aired on channel 39, but there was no audio. It is believed that this was some type of test by the engineers testing the transmitter to see if it was still in workable condition while they closed up shop in Deer Park.

In 2002 channel 39 became an affiliate of Azteca América, after the network earlier failed to acquire WSAH, which they intended to use as New York's Azteca América flagship.
