Schengen-samarbejdet

Schengen-samarbejdet bygger på Schengen-traktaten, som oprindelig blev indgået af fem EU-lande (Tyskland, Frankrig, Belgien, Nederland og Luxembourg) i juni 1985 på skibet "Prinsesse Marie-Astrid" på Mosel-floden nær landsbyen Schengen i Luxemburg ved den franske og tyske grænse.
Traktatens formål var at nedlægge europæiske grænseposter og fjerne grænsekontrollen indenfor Schengenområdet samt harmonisere eksterne grænsekontroller.
Den 19. juni 1990 undertegnede de samme lande en aftale mere, Schengen-konventionen.
Flere lande har sluttet sig til traktaten i løbet af de seneste år. For tiden er der 15 Schengen-lande, alle i Europa.
Der er ingen ordinær paskontrol mellem medlemslandene.

Følgende er i dag medlemmer af Schengen-samarbejdet: Belgien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrig, Grækenland, Island, Italien, Luxembourg, Nederland, Norge, Portugal, Spanien, Sverige, Tyskland, Østrig.
Følgende lande har undertegnet traktaten: Estland, Letland, Litauen, Polen, Tjekkiet, Slovakiet og Ungarn, men traktaten er endnu ikke trådt i kraft i disse lande.
