Plankton
From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
Plankton are tiny living things that live in the ocean. They are not strong enough to swim against ocean currents. There are three groups:
- Phytoplankton - algae that live at the surface of the ocean to make food from sunlight. Some phytoplankton are also bacterioplankton.
- Zooplankton - small animals and protozoans that eat other plankton.
- Bacterioplankton - bacteria and archaea that are important in remineralisation.
Plankton are important in the ocean's food chain. Many filter feeders, such as krill and whale sharks, eat them.
