According to Hinduism and Hindu mythology, Parvati is the wife of Shiva. Shiva is one of the gods of Hindus. Parvati is a word of Sanskrit language, and it means daughter of the mountain. The Hindu tradition states that she is the daughter of the Himalayas Mountains as she generally lived there.
When shown alone, her image shows her with four arms. In her arms she carries prayer beads, a mirror, a bell and citron. But, when she sits by the side of her husband Shiva, her image shows her with only two arms. Her conveyance (vahana) is a lion or tiger. It means that she rides a lion or a tiger.
In Hindu scriptures, Parvati finds mention many times. She has many other names and some of them are:
- Ambika, meaning the mother
- Gauri, meaning the golden
- Shyama meaning dark
- Bhairavi, meaning awesome
- Durga, meaning inaccessible
- Kali, meaning black
