Mac OS X
From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
Mac OS X is an operating system (OS) for computers made by Apple Computer. Computers made by Apple are called Macintosh (Mac) computers. Mac OS X first came out in 2001, when Apple made an entirely new operating system for the Macintosh. This new operating system, called Mac OS X, replaced the older Mac operating system, called Mac OS. Mac OS X is based on UNIX, another operating system. Mac OS X is like UNIX, but it has a graphical user interface (GUI) built also, so someone using a Mac can use a mouse and keyboard and see pictures and icons on the screen. Normal UNIX requires the user to enter commands with only a keyboard. Mac OS X is a multitasking OS, meaning that it can do more than one thing at a time. You can get Mac OS X by buying a new Macintosh computer, or if you already have a Macintosh computer that is compatible with OS X, you can buy a copy from a store that sells Apple products.
The latest version that has been released is "Mac OS X Tiger". This version allows users to use the system on many newer Macintosh computers, some up to 5 years old, as well as the newest Macintosh computers which have faster and different chips called Intel chips.
