[modifica] Infanzia e giovinezza
Nato a Kingsland (Arkansas, USA), da una numerosa e povera famiglia di contadini dell'Arkansas, Cash aiuta da bambino i genitori nella coltivazione del cotone in un piccolo appezzamento di terreno fornito dal governo in seguito al "New Deal". Cash riferira' di avere in sangue indiano nelle vene, fatto mai provato. Si appassiona alla musica attraverso i canti in chiesa e l'ascolto del country alla radio. Nel 1950, si arruola in aviazione e compie una parte del servizio militare in Germania dove acquista una chitarra e comincia ad imparare a suonare da solo.
[modifica] Primo contratto
Il primo contratto lo ottiene nel 1955 con la Sun Records di Memphis, per cui incide i primi singoli, tra cui « Cry, Cry, Cry» (sua prima incisione) e «Folsom prison blues». Nel 1957 è il primo solista della Sun a pubblicare un disco, «Johnny Cash with his hot and blue guitar». Nel 1960 il passaggio alla Columbia dove incide un album gospel, «Hymns by Johnny Cash». Il successo ha un impatto devastante sulla sua fragile psiche: la frenetica attività porta Cash a fare uso di sonniferi per riposare meglio e di anfetamine per riprendersi velocemente e non capita di rado che il musicista tenga concerti senza voce a causa dell'uso continuo di droghe. A ciò si aggiungono gravi problemi familiari, dipendenza da droghe e guai giudiziari (nel 1965 viene arrestato a El Paso (Texas) per introduzione illegale di pillole di anfetamina, nel 1967 viene salvato da un collasso per overdose) che lo portano in carcere (Folsom State Prison – California) dove incide, nel 1968, il suo album più noto, «Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison».
[modifica] Il matrimonio con June Carter
Si trasferisce a Nashville (Tennessee), dove tenta di cambiare vita e dove sposa June Carter, con cui co-scrisse «Ring of fire» (1968).
La versatilità nell'interpretare ballate, gospel, blues, country e rockabilly e l'incisività delle sue composizioni, ispirate alla vita e al lavoro quotidiano, fanno di Cash un vero e proprio simbolo di punto di congiunzione tra la tradizione, il country moderno e il pop commerciale. A questi anni risale la collaborazione con il cantante Bob Dylan con cui incide 20 canzoni che appariranno nel bootleg "Big River, The Nashville Session" tra cui il brano "Girl from the North Country" che apparirà nell'LP "Nashville Skyline".
Nel 1969 inizia un fortunato programma televisivo sul network ABC. Nel 1971 interpreta 'A gunfight', film western con Kirk Douglas, poi partecipa a 'The gospel road', pellicola imperniata sulla figura di Cristo e compare nella serie «Colombo» di Peter Falk. Anche la produzione musicale è di alto livello e mantiene Cash ai vertici delle classifiche con album come «What is truth», «Man in black» e «Flesh and blood».
Pubblica un'autobiografia nel 1975, "Man in Black", che ottiene una vendita di 1.300.000 copie (una seconda autobiografia compare nel 1998, "Cash: The Autobiography"). Negli anni '80 inizia il declino nonostante la stima di colleghi e appassionati ma resta comunque in classifica specialmente con «Johnny 99», in cui interpreta le canzoni di Bruce Springsteen. La resurrezione è del 1993 con il nuovo contratto con la American Records di Rick Rubin. Il primo disco «American recordings» viene accolto trionfalmente, e così i seguenti, «Unchained» (1998), «American III: Solitary man» e «American IV: The man comes around», il suo ultimo cd, che esce quasi in contemporanea con un album di tributo che gli dedicano colleghi di tutte le generazioni.

Il 15 maggio 2003, muore sua moglie June all'età di 71 anni. Nel settembre dello stesso anno, viene ricoverato nel Baptist Hospital di Nashville per complicazioni diabetiche, dove muore il 12 settembre.

Nel novembre 2005 debutta nelle sale cinematografiche statunitensi Quando l'amore brucia l'anima (Walk the Line), film biografico su Johnny Cash, qui interpretato da Joaquin Phoenix. Il lungometraggio, diretto da James Mangold, vede come co-protagonista Reese Witherspoon nella parte di June Carter Cash.
