"WNFM-TV" "My TV 8" is the cable-only MyNetworkTV television affiliate in the Ft. Myers / Naples, Florida area. The WNFM callsign is fictional, as the station is a cable-only station. The station is available on Comcast channel 8, hence the My TV 8 branding. For non-cable viewers, the station is also available part-time over the air on two low-powered stations, WEVU-CA on channel 4 in Ft. Myers, and WBSP-CA on channel 7 in Naples. Together, the stations serve Ft. Myers, Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero and Cape Coral. Along with MNTV network programming, the station is the broadcast home of the Florida Everblades ice hockey team. WNFM airs a newscast called D'Latinos Morning News which airs in Spanish and is shown weekdays at 7 AM.

Although WEVU-CA and WBSP-CA are owned by Caloosa Television Corporation, Equity Broadcasting lists WEVU-CA as being one of their stations. It also says that WEVU-CA is affiliated with Univision, a Spanish television network. [1] This may explain why Spanish news airs on WEVU, WBSP, and WNFM.

The WEVU call letters were once used on what is now WZVN, the local ABC affiliate.

[edit] Network Switch

On January 24, 2006, The WB and UPN networks announced that they would merge. The newly combined network would be called The CW, the letters representing the first initial of its corporate parents CBS (the parent company of UPN) and the Warner Bros. unit of Time Warner. The merger took effect on-air on September 18, 2006. WTVK has become The CW affiliate for southwest Florida.

On February 22, 2006, the FOX broadcasting company announced that they would start up another new primetime network called MyNetworkTV, which launched on September 5, 2006. The new network, which is sister to FOX, is operated by Fox Television Stations and its syndication division, Twentieth Television. MNTV was created to give UPN and WB stations another option other than become CW affiliates or independent. Cable-only WNFM has become the MNTV affiliate for southwest Florida.

As a UPN affiliate, the station was known as UPN 8. On July 30, 2006, access to WNFM's website ended and it was unknown if the station would create another website, if any, under another web adreess. The old web address of the station, "upn-8.com", redirected to the main MNTV network page. It was unknown at that point if the old website was being redone, or that the station would no longer have a website.

On August 10, 2006, the station became known as My TV 8. A new website for the station was made public, "mytv8.com", featuring a new MNTV logo. Also, WNFM's website featured a promo for a new 10 PM newscast, called ABC 7 Gulfshore News at 10 on My TV 8, which began showing on the station later that month. The 10 PM newscast is produced by the area's ABC affiliate WZVN. The newscast airs seven days a week. The weekday newsteam consists of anchor Len Jennings, chief meteorologist Jim Reif, and Jason Kurtz with sports. On the weekends, Bay Scroggins and Meredith Putney anchor, with meteorologist Jim Clarke and sports anchor Noah Pransky. Other WZVN staff are also used. This became the second newscast at 10 PM in the market, competing with FOX affiliate WFTX. It remains to be seen if the WZVN-produced WNFM newscast can compete against the more established one on WFTX. It is likely that WNFM will continue to air the Spanish morning news. It now seems unlikely that WNFM will change its fictional call letters with the current MNTV affiliation.

The statuses of WEVU and WBSP are unknown at this time, but it is likely that they have become part time MNTV affiliates, as with UPN. Nothing official has been said, however.
