Sir Alexander Cunningham

sir Alexander Cunningham, engelsk arkeolog, född 1814, död 1894, blev ingenjörofficer och kom 1834, såsom adjutant hos generalguvernören, till Indien, varest han utförde ambassader till Kashmir och Tibet samt 1858 utnämndes till överingenjör i nordvästprovinserna och 1870 till arkeologisk generalinspektör över Indien.
Han erhöll avsked 1885 och återvände till England, varvid han genom ett skeppsbrott vid Ceylon förlorade största delen av sina dyrbara samlingar. Cunningham författade bl.a. "An essay on the arian order of architecture" (1846), "The Bhilsa topes, or Buddhist monuments of Central India" (1854), "Ladak, physical, statistical, and historical" (s.å.), "Archceological survey of India" (1871 ff.; utg. på styrelsens bekostnad) och "Book of indian eras" (1883) samt utgav "Corpus inscriptionum indicarum" (1878).
