Abraham de Moivre

Abraham de Moivre, född 26 maj 1667, död 27 november 1754, fransk matematiker.
Moivre flydde efter upphävandet av ediktet i Nantes (1685) till England och bosatte sig i London. Han var medlem av vetenskapsakademierna i London, Paris och Berlin samt utsågs av förstnämnda samfund till skiljedomare i den bekanta striden mellan Newton och Leibniz angående vem av dem, som var differentialräkningens upphovsman.
Moivre är kanske mest känd för de Moivres formel som visar sambandet mellan komplexa tal och trigonometri.
