SONAR (SOund NAvigation and Ranging) er en teknik som bruker lyd under vann til å navigere med eller detektere andre fartøyer. Der er to typer sonarer, aktive og passive.
[rediger] Aktiv sonar
Aktiv sonar registrerer ekkoer av egen utsendt lyd. Sonaren virker etter samme prinsipp som radaren (ekkoprinsippet), det vil si at den utsender en kort lydbølge (ofte kalt et ping) og registrerer ekkoene på en skjerm. Det tar lengre tid å få ekkoene hjem da lydens hastighet i vann er ca 1500 m/s. Ekkoloddet er et eksempel på en sonar som kun ser nedover for å måle dybden.

Passiv sonar eller hydrofonen, registrerer utelukkende lyd fra andre skip (eller lyder fra havdyr).
