O Premio Nobel de Literatura é un dos 5 premios específicamente sinalados no testamento do escandinavo Alfred Nobel. Segundo as súas palabras, o premio debe entregarse cada ano "a quen produza no campo da literatura a obra máis salientábel, na dirección correcta". A institución encargada de seleccionar ó gañador é a Academia Sueca (en sueco, Svenska Akademien).

Dez dos cen galardoados co premio no século XX foron de fala hispana: os españois José Echegaray y Eizaguirre (1904), Jacinto Benavente (1922), Juan Ramón Jiménez (1956), Vicente Aleixandre (1977), e Camilo José Cela (1989); os chilenos Gabriela Mistral (1945) e Pablo Neruda (1971); o guatemalteco Miguel Angel Asturias (1967); o colombiano Gabriel García Márquez (1982) e o mexicano Octavio Paz (1990). .
