Banda de black metal noruego fundada en 1990, disuelta en 2001 y reformada en 2005. Actualmente formada por Samoth, Ihsahn y Trym, Emperor es uno de los primeros exponentes del black metal sinfónico utilizando teclados y melodías complejas en sus composiciones sin dejar de lado sonidos oscuros y ambientales típicos del genero. Sus letras hablan sobre ideas vikingas y paganas, centrándose en la oscuridad, la fuerza del ser humano, temas de ocultismo, leyendas/folklore noruego y algunos temas más. El grupo estuvo relacionado con la escena underground del black metal noruego de principios de los noventa, y en el llamado Inner Circle.

[editar] Los comienzos del grupo

Cuando eran jóvenes, Ihsahn y Samoth se conocieron en un seminario de música rock. Los dos jóvenes comenzaron a tocar juntos bajo varios nombres; primero Dark Device, luego Xerasia, y más tarde Embryonic. El grupo pronto evoluciono a los ahora más conocidos Thou Shalt Suffer. Poco después, Samoth comenzó a escribir música fuera de Thou Shalt Suffer, junto con Ihsahn y el bajista Mortiis (que sería el fundador de su banda Mortiis), Emperor había nacido. Después de poco tiempo juntos, publicaron una demo titulada "Wrath Of The Tyrant" que poco a poco ganó popularidad en el entorno underground y atrajo la atención del recién creado sello Candlelight. El grupo fue finalmente contratado, Samoth cambió a la guitarra rítmica, Ihsahn continuó como cantante y guitarra principal Faust fue incorporado al grupo como batería.

En el verano de 1992 un serie de acontecimientos ocurrieron en el llamado grupo Inner Circle noruego. Miembros de Mayhem y Samoth junto a otros black metaleros quemaron algunas antiguas iglesias de Noruega. También ese año, Faust, estaba en el pueblo de Lillehammer observando el nuevo parque olímpico de los juegos de invierno. Un homosexual se aproximó y le preguntó si quería ir con el al bosque. Faust aceptó y una vez en el bosque apuñaló al hombre hasta matarlo. No fue preso hasta un año después. En verano de 1993 Emperor empezó a trabajar en su primer LP. El grupo acompañó a los famosos Cradle Of Filth en su gira, tras la cual dejaron de pintar su cuerpo y caras, alegando que se había convertido en algo puramente estético y había perdido todo su significado y simbolismo original. En otoño, la policía comenzó a investigar el asesinato de Euronymous del grupo Mayhem, siendo Varg Vikernes (de Burzum) el principal culpable. La investigación también conllevó la encarcelación de Samoth por la quema de iglesias y de Faust por el asesinato de Lillehammer.

[editar] Progresión y ruptura

En 1994, "In The Nightside Eclipse" fue lanzado y aclamado extensamente por un gran número de primeros fans.

Después que Samoth cumpliera su condena de dos años en prisión por complicidad en el incendio de varias iglesias, el grupo incorporó a Trym en la batería, y al final de 1996, Emperor entró de nuevo a estudio para grabar su album más definitivo hasta la fecha: ""Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk", lanzado en 1997. Con un sonido mucho más logrado que sus anteriores publicaciones, Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk obtuvo un mayor éxito comercial, ganado el título de album del año en muchas de las revistas de metal más conocidas del mundo, como Terrorizer y Metal Maniacs.

Ahora el grupo continua su carrera como un trío (Trym, Samoth e Ihsahn). Con Ihsahn en los teclados, voz, guitarra y bajo grabaron su tercer album IX Equilibrium (publicado en 1999) y giraron por Europa y Estados Unidos. En el año 2000 Samoth y Trym comenzaron a participar en proyectos alternativos de death metal, mientras que Ihsahn se centró en la exploración más progresiva y artística con su proyecto Peccatum. Por ello, en 2001 Emperor se disolvió tras grabar su cuarto album Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise , compuesto por Ihsahn.

Tras la ruptura, Samoth y Trym continuaron tocando en su banda de black/death metal Zyklon, mientras que Ihsahn se centró en su proyecto Peccatum. Después Ihsahn anunció su proyecto en solitario junto con el batería Asgeir Mickelson (de Borknagar) obteniendo buenas opiniones en la comunidad black metalera.

[editar] Actualidad

El grupo tocó por sorpresa tres canción en un festival en Oslo el 30 de septiembre del 2005, donde anunciaron una serie de conciertos en California, Nueva York y Europa en 2006. En febrero de 2006 también anunciaron conciertos en el Inferno Metal Festival en abril y en el Wacken Open Air en agosto. Lamentablemente, Samoth tuvo problemas para tocar en los conciertos de EEUU por problemas entrando en el país, por lo que Emperor tuvo que tocar sin el.

Recientemente Ihsahn anunció la publicación el 31 de octubre de un libro de tablaturas basadas en su recopilatorio Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath.
