WZXZ-CA currently is the MTV2 affiliate for Orlando, Florida. The station is owned by L4 Media Group, and broadcasts on UHF TV channel 36.
In the mid 1990s until 2001, WZXZ was Orlando, Florida's local The Box affiliate, and broadcast on VHF Channel 11. The transmitter was in Orlando, and reception in the greater Orlando metro area was good, but reception on the Space Coast was poor at best.
Following the acquisition of The Box by Viacom in 2000, at midnight on January, 1, 2001, WZXZ began broadcasting the then newly re-launched MTV2 television network. Broadcasting continued on channel 11 as usual until July, 6, 2001, when a permit was obtained, allowing WZXZ to be rebroadcast as a low-power tvlevision station on UHF Channel 36 from a transmitter in Melbourne, Florida.
Ultimately, it was decided that broadcasting to the very popular beaches off of Daytona Beach, Melbourne, and Cocoa Beach would be more profitable than running a transmitter in Orlando and a low-power repeater in Melbourne. On August 16, 2002 the FCC licensed WZXZ-CA in Melbourine, and on September, 4, 2002, the change was made official, and broadcasting on channel 11 from the Orlando transmitter ceased.
The current setup provides a decent signal to the beaches and surrounding areas, however in the Orlando Metro area, signal reception is poor at best, except during times of Sporadic E propagation.
