[edit] History

The station originated as WKST-TV on channel 45 licensed to New Castle, Pennsylvania and signed on October 30, 1957 [1] . At that time, it was the only full-time ABC affiliate in Western Pennsylvania, as WTAE in Pittsburgh did not sign on until September 1958. WKST-TV moved to channel 33, was re-licensed to Youngstown and became WYTV. The current call letters were adopted in 1964.

On June 13th, 2006, it was announced that WYTV will launch a second channel this fall which would carry the new MyNetworkTV service. The channel will be called "My YTV", and it will air a mixture of national and local programs in addition to a 10 p.m. newscast. The new station will air 18 hours of original local programming each week and another 30½ hours of local programming that is not original. This is a major step for a Youngstown TV station as most of the programming that is produced is either news or local football games. [2] [3] [4] [5]

The move makes WYTV the last full-power station to launch a secondary channel in Youngstown, and creates the market's second 10 PM newscast. WYTV also announced plans to build a satellite, streetside news studio in downtown Youngstown.

Chelsey Television has registered the MYYTV.TV domain for its launch, however currently that domain goes to a redirect site [6].

The station will carry reruns of shows also aired on WYTV, as well as the following original programs:

  • For the People: Public affairs programs focusing on community issues. Airs at 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. weekdays. The live show also simulcasts on WSOM-AM from 3 to 5 p.m.
  • MySports Talk, A live half-hour program focusing on local sports. Airs at 10:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Increase the Peace: Scheduled to air Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. and Sundays at 9:30 a.m., the show will seek ways to overcome the problem of gang violence in Youngstown.

In addition, the station will allow 1½ hours of programming prepared by area high school television production classes every weekend.

Armstrong Cable, one of the market's largest cable systems, carries myytv on channel 13, replacing WUAB, the sister MNTV affiliate in Cleveland. In addition, Comcast and Time Warner/Adelphia cable networks will carry the new service. [7] [8]

[edit] Facts

  • After moving to channel 33, WYTV was replaced on channel 45 by non-network independent station WXTV, which moved from channel 73. WXTV remained on the air until the late 1962. The station had scheduled programming from 6pm to 11 pm and they repeated the same programs multiple times within a given week. [9] In 1975, channel 45 was re-allocated to nearby Alliance, Ohio as an educational channel and became WNEO.
  • The WKST calls still exist in New Castle on AM 1200, and for a time were also on FM 92.1 (now WKPL-FM) until Clear Channel Communications moved the WKST-FM calls to Pittsburgh's Kiss FM on 96.1 (the former WTAE-FM) in 2000.
  • WYTV was Youngstown's first FOX network affiliate from 1994 to 1998. WYTV carried Fox programming in addition to the station's primary ABC network programming. Youngstown did not have a full time Fox affiliate, and WYTV joined the network as a secondary affiliate in part due to Fox's acquisition of the rights to NFL football. In 1998, Youngstown got its own full-time FOX network affiliate when WKBN-TV launched sister low power station WYFX.
  • WYTV is Youngstown's current preseason home of the Cleveland Browns NFL football team. They have been carrying the games since 2005.
  • WYTV also provides WQXK-FM with weather updates from its skymax weather lab. WQXK was once owned by cross town rival WFMJ-TV in the early 50's.
  • WYTV also produces the local quiz show Academic Challenge, in which high school students from all over the area answer questions for prizes.
  • WYTV has gained a level of notoriety for constantly changing its station logo; while most of the stations in the area have retained their logos for a prolonged period of time or only slightly modifying them, WYTV has made a habit of changing its station's logo every couple of years.
  • WYTV was owned by Benedek Broadcasting until the company's bankruptcy filing in 2002. Instead of being purchased by Gray Television, WYTV was purchased by Chelsey Television LLC. Currently, the station is managed by Barrington Broadcasting.[10]
