WOAC is a full-power television station licensed to Canton, Ohio and serves the entire Cleveland-Akron-Canton, Ohio market area.
This station is an affiliate of the Shop at Home and Jewelry Television home shopping networks, and is owned and operated by The E.W. Scripps Company alongside sister and parent station WEWS-TV. However, unlike most duopolies the two stations are operated totally separate of each other to the point of sharing no common staff whatsoever, as WOAC's ownership by Scripps had been via Shop at Home.
This station operates on UHF channel 67 at 5,000 kilowatts and has a digital signal on channel 47 also on the UHF dial, licensed to operate at 1,000 kilowatts, however signed a Special Temporary Authority to operate at only 17.3 kilowatts, all by authorization and under the supervision of the Federal Communications Commission.
[edit] History
WOAC began its broadcasting operation on April 23, 1982 and it has been almost a quarter of a century since its inception.
Before becoming a home shopping channel, WOAC operated as an independent TV station serving mainly the Canton area. It featured syndicated reruns, movies, and local news updates.
[edit] Recent events
On May 16, 2006, parent company E.W. Scripps announced that Shop at Home would be suspending operations, effective June 22, 2006. [1] Jewelry Television took over the Shop at Home network operations, and WOAC and other Shop at Home affiliates have been running a combination of programming from the two networks.
That programming will remain on the station until a buyer for the station is found. Scripps announced it will not keep the station, despite owning nearby WEWS.
On September 26, 2006, Scripps announced that it was selling its Shop at Home stations, including WOAC, to Multicultural Television of New York City for $170 million. [2]
