WSYT is a broadcast television station in Syracuse, New York affiliated with the Fox network. It broadcasts on channel 68. It is owned by The Sinclair Broadcast Group. Its transmitter is located in Otisco, New York.
[edit] History
WSYT began operation on February 15, 1986 with a general entertainment format of cartoons, classic sitcoms, recent sitcoms, movies, drama shows, and sports. Later that year, WSYT joined the newly-formed Fox Broadcasting Company.
In 1987, WSYT's original owners sold the station to the TVX Broadcast Group [citation needed]. FCC-imposed ownership limits and huge debt from the Taft purchase led to TVX selling many of its medium market stations, so WSYT was sold to the Flatley Company, owners of CBS affiliate (formerly independent) WNHT channel 21 in Manchester/Concord, New Hampshire.
Flatley invested lots of money into both stations, including WNHT's news operation. However, WNHT could not compete with stations from Boston (WNEV channel 7, now NBC affiliate WHDH-TV) and Portland (WGME-TV channel 13), which were available in most of WNHT's viewing area. In 1989, after losing lots of money, Flatley deciced to exit broadcasting, shutting down WNHT (while keeping the license for a few more years, station is now WPXG, a satellite of i O&O WBPX), and selling WSYT outright to Encore Communications.
As time went on, more first-run talk and reality shows were added to the schedule. In 1998, the Sinclair Broadcast Group bought WSYT.
