WSFX-TV (Fox 26) is the Fox affiliate for Wilmington, North Carolina. The station is owned by Southeastern Media Holdings, but is operated by Raycom Media under a local marketing agreement with NBC affiliate WECT, with whom it shares a studio. It broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 26, and its digital signal on UHF channel 30. It broadcasts The Tube music video channel on its digital subchannel 26.2. WSFX's transmitter is located in Winnabow, North Carolina.
The station began in 1982 as WJKA-TV, a CBS affiliate. However, it operated on a shoestring budget, with virtually no local news. In the mid 1980s, it had a noon show called "Midday" and had news and entertainment.
In 1994, after CBS lost the NFL to Fox, WJKA switched to the Fox network and in the process, changed its call letters to WSFX. Before then, Wilmington received Fox programming from WLFL-TV in Raleigh on cable. This left Wilmington without a local CBS affiliate until 2000, when low-power WILM-LP took on the CBS affiliation.
Since September 22, 2003, WECT has produced a 10 o'clock news program for WSFX. It is currently the only 10 o'clock news program in the market.
Beginning September 13, 2006, WECT also produces a one-hour edition of Carolina in the Morning newscast from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
The call letters stand for SuperFoX, since until 1996, it was the Fox affiliate for Florence/Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as well as Wilmington. However, WSFX's signal does not reach Florence over the air, meaning that the Pee Dee area had to rely on cable for Fox programming until WGSE-TV in Myrtle Beach took the Fox affiliation as WFXB.
