The Web Cartoonist's Choice Awards (WCCA) is an annual event, since the summer of 2001, in which online cartoonists nominate and select outstanding webcomics in a variety of categories. The WCCA represents a form of peer recognition since voting membership is open, only, to the sole creator, writer, artist (including colorists), or webmaster of an online webcomic. Winners receive an individualized web banner for their site. Because the membership is made up entirely of people with some sort of online presence, all official business is transacted over the Internet.
The WCCA started in 2001 being hosted by Comic Genesis (then Keenspace)), with a separate forum. Since then the site has moved off to its own server.
In 2003, 2005 and 2006, the awards were presented in a "ceremony", which takes the form of multiple comics by different artists, containing their characters listing the nominees and declaring the winner. Planning problems resulted in the lack of ceremony in 2004, and the 2006 ceremony was delayed (see below).

Controversy over the procedure - and even necessity - of the awards has existed since the beginning. Common claims are that the WCCAs are nothing more than a popularity contest and that the widely known comics such as Penny Arcade, Megatokyo and PvP are always nominated and usually win. By contrast, the awards are said to give little recognition to talented - but unknown - artists.
However, no comic has won an award all five years and only 5 comics have even received nominations each year.
The comic with the most awards are: Mac Hall: 2 in 2002, 4 in 2003, and 3 in 2004. Next is Chopping Block with 4 in 2001 and 4 in 2002. Then comes Penny Arcade with 2 awards in 2003 and 5 in 2004, Count Your Sheep with 6 awards in 2004, and Megatokyo with 4 in 2002 and 1 in 2003. PvP has the most nominations without a win — 2 in 2001, 5 in 2003, and 3 in 2004 — followed by Clan of the Cats — 3 in 2001, 2 in 2002, and 2 in 2003.
It has therefore been argued that the WCCAs increase interest in comics that voters may never have seen before. It also gives artists a chance to collectively praise the work of others, and encourages webcartoonists to participate as a community, and the WCCA staff continues trying to improve the awards with passing each year (such as adding more diverse categories, including one just for the year's newcomers).
In 2006 Eric Millikin's Fetus-X was nominated for "Best Romance Comic" but was later disqualified as inappropriate. The award ceremony was late due to technical issues, trailing the on-time annoucment of the winners by a week. An early, unfinished version of the ceremony was leaked on Comixpedia [1].
