Chỉ số khối cơ thể - thường được biết đến với chữ viết tắt BMI theo tên tiếng Anh Body Mass Index - được dùng để đánh giá mức độ gầy hay béo của người.
Chỉ số này có thể giúp xác định một người bị bệnh béo phì hay bị bệnh suy dinh dưỡng.

Gọi W là khối lượng của một người (tính bằng kg) và H là chiều cao của người đó (tính bằng m), chỉ số khối cơ thể được tính theo công thức:

- BMI<18,5: người gầy
- BMI=18,5 - 24,9: người bình thường
- BMI=25 - 29,9: người béo béo phì độ I
- BMI=30 - 34,9: người béo phì độ II
- BMI>35: người béo phì độ III

Nam:
- BMI < 20: người dưới cân
- 20 <= BMI < 25: người bình thường
- 25 <= BMI < 30: người quá cân
- BMI > 30: người béo phì
Nữ:
- BMI < 18: người dưới cân
- 18 <= BMI < 23: người bình thường
- 23 <= BMI < 30: người quá cân
- BMI > 30: người béo phì
