Welding
From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
Welding is a way of heating pieces of metal using electricity so that they melt and stick together. There are many kinds of welding, including arc welding, resistance welding, and gas welding. The most common type is arc welding. There are different kinds of arc welding too—shielded metal arc welding (or "stick welding") is a common type, and so is gas metal arc welding (also known as metal inert gas welding or MIG welding). Another type of welding that is less common is tungsten inert gas welding (also known as tungsten inert gas welding or TIG welding).
Shielded metal arc welding is a type of welding that can be done outside, even when it is windy. It is used to build things, like buildings or pipes. It is also used to repair things. It works best for welding steel.
Gas metal arc welding is usually used in factories to make things. It cannot be used outside because it uses inert gas to cover the area being welded, and the gas would blow away if there was a wind. The inert gas is usually carbon dioxide or argon.
Gas tungsten arc welding is used to weld aluminum. This type of welding also uses an inert gas to protect the area being welded, but usually only argon is used. The welds made with gas tungsten arc welding are very strong, but they are hard to make. It requires much training to be able to do this method of welding.
