License
From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
We have a license (or: licence) to do something when the law of a country decides that it is ok for us to do it. In many countries, people who want to drive a car must get a license to do this. In many countries, people who want to shoot animals must get a license to do this.
In many countries, if we try to do something without the correct license to do it, we might have to pay a fine or go to prison.
Another kind of license is a letter from a person or a company, authorizing another person or company who receives it, to have or use a copy of something they have created, such as a computer software application, a picture, or a song.
In the Commonwealth, this word is spelled licence, and is pronounced the same way.
