Nagroda Grammy jest przyznawana przez Narodową Akademię Sztuki i Techniki Rejestracji w USA, za wyróżniające się osiągnięcia w muzyce rozrywkowej. Jest jedną z trzech najbardziej znaczących nagród muzycznych przyznawanych co rok. Pozostałymi dwiema są Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards oraz czasami do pozostałych trzech zalicza się również Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Grammy (zazwyczaj przyznawana w lutym) jest poniekąd muzycznym Oscarem.
Podobnie jak nagroda Oscara, Grammy jest przyznawana w bardzo wielu kategoriach. Aktualnie jest ich w 105, co daje łącznie ponad 30 różnych gatunków muzycznych, np. takie jak pop, gospel, rap czy rock. To, kto dostanie nagrodę, zależy od głosów członków Narodową Akademię Sztuki i Techniki Rejestracji - inaczej niżeli w przypadku nagród BMA'u i AMA'su, które przyznawane są za popularność, a nie za zasługi.
Nagrody wzięła swoją nazwę od wyglądu statuetki przyznawanej artystom. Jest to mały, pozłacany gramofon. Bardzo często swoją obecnością, ceremonię wręczania nagród, zaszczycają znane osobistości ze świata muzyki. Ceremonia wręczenia nagród Grammy są prezentowane na żywo w telewizji.
Częstą przypadłością Grammy jest fakt, że ludzie z komisji przyznającej wyróżnienie, są ściśle związani z przemysłem muzycznych (np. z tak zwanymi majorsami: BMG, EMI, Sony, Universal), przez co część artystów, część środowiska muzycznego czy chociażby fani nie biorą nagrody Grammy na serio.
Kilka z "wielkich zjawisk" w muzyce rozrywkowej, takich jak: Elvis Presley czy The Rolling Stones zostało nagrodzonych tylko kilkoma statuetkami. Z kolei grupa The Beatles zdobyła więcej nagród, niż Elvis i The Rolling Stones razem wzięci - The Beatles zdobyli Grammy w 1966 w kategorii Song of the Year za piosenkę ("Michelle"), w 1967 w kategorii Album of the Year za album (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) oraz w 1996 roku z album The Beatles Anthology.
Z "wielkiej trójki" muzycznych nagród, Grammy jest najbardziej cenioną nagrodą. Cześć środowiska muzycznego uważa, że z powodu rywalizacji tych trzech nagród między sobą, powinno się wprowadzić jednolity i zunifikowany systemu przyznawania nagród.
