Prosess

Prosess betyr framgangsmåte og brukes som betegnelse på flere forhold.
En prosess kan være både en serie fysiske arbeidsoperasjoner og en tankemessig utvikling. I begge tilfeller er formålet normalt å frambringe et bestemt resultat.
I juridisk sammenheng brukes prosess som betegnelse for de regler som gjelder for føring av saker ved en domstol eller annet tvisteløsningsorgan. Man skiller mellom straffeprosess, som er regler som blir anvendt i straffesaker, og sivilprosess, som brukes i sivile tvister.
Det som reguleres i prosesslovgivningen er blant annet generelle regler for saksavviklingen, hvem som kan opptre i en domstol som dommer eller sakfører (advokat), regler for bevisføring, anvendelse av rettsmidler mv. Prosessreglene gir dessuten anvisning på hvilke feil ved saksbehandlingen som kan påberopes for en høyere domstol som grunnlag for å få en dom eller kjennelse opphevet.
