J-pop

J-pop er en forkortelse for japansk populærkultur. Utrykket ble først tatt i bruk av radiokanalen J-Wave for popmusikk, men inneholder flere stilarter enn bare pop, for eksempel rock, dance, rap og soul. Samtidig som interssen for Japan har vokst i resten av verden de siste årene, har også interessen for J-pop vokst utenfor Japans grenser. Dette skyldes i stor grad bruken av J-pop-sanger i populære animeserier som er blitt svært populære også utenfor Japan (Naruto, Pokémon, Digimon m.v.).
Utenfor Japan er det spesielt Ayumi Hamasaki som er kjent innen sjangeren, og hun blir ofte sett på som «dronningen» av J-pop.
Innenfor sjangeren kan også nevnes: Morning Musume, Glay, Speed, Gackt, Every Little Thing, Halcali, Orange Range, Hikaru Utada og Ai Otsuka.
De største innenfor J-rock-sjangeren er blant andre L'Arc~en~Ciel, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Dir en grey, High and Mighty Color, Janne da Arc, Plastic Tree, X Japan, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Sex Machineguns,The Pillows, Kagerou og Sambomaster.
Innenfor J-rocken er finnes blant annet underkategoriene Visual Kei og J-metal.
