Alex North, 4 dicembre 1910 - 8 settembre 1991, fù un compositote americano estensore della prima colonna sonora jazz per il film Un tram chiamato desiderio ed il primo a comporre una colonna sonora in musica moderna Viva Zapata!. Nato a Chester, Pennsylvania, Alex North è stato un autore di musica classica del XX secolo non indulgendo al classicismo del XIX. È stato quello che suol dirsi un innovatore che ha saputo manipolare il leitmotif delle sue partiture trasformandolo in musiche sempre diverse. Uno di questi divenne la famosissima canzone "Unchained melody". Ebbe la nomination all'Oscar ben 15 volte senza mai vincere il premio. È stato, comunque, l'unico musicista ad ottenere un premio Oscar alla carriera. Le sue piú popolari colonne sonore sono, Spartacus, Cleopatra, Dragonslyer, Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Devil's Brigade e la colonna sonora per 2001: Odissea nello spazio commissionata e poi non utilizzata dal regista Stanley Kubrick. Fra le sue composizioni classiche si ricorda Rapsodia per piano e Trumpet obbligato e orchestra.
