[edit] The event
The Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between the 30th April to the 16th May 1982. This was the first tournament in which the top 8 seeds had to play in the first round, taking the tournament from 24 to 32 players.
The reigning champion was Steve Davis, who had dominated the season along with Terry Griffiths, and expectations were high for a Davis-Griffiths final. In fact, Davis, worn out from a year on the road, lost 10-1 to Tony Knowles in the first round and Griffiths, unable to motivate himself after Davis's defeat, lost 10-6 in the same round to Willie Thorne. Alex Higgins won his second world title, with an 18-15 victory over Ray Reardon in the final.
[edit] Miscellanea
1982 extended the first round stage from 24 to 32 players, making the entire Top-16 players play five rounds to win the world title. This format still remains today.
