WKYT-TV, channel 27, is the CBS station in Lexington, Kentucky, serving the east-central part of Kentucky. Its transmitter is located in Lexington.

WKYT also operates a local CW affiliate, CWKYT on its digital signal, as well as Hazard's WYMT (which carries WKYT on their own digital feed). Until recently, Louisville WB affiliate and future CW affiliate WBKI was available on Lexington cable systems; WBKI was recently dropped from Insight systems in the Lexington area, to accommodate for the new CWKYT.[1] CWKYT can now be seen on Direct TV on channel 14. Baltimore CW station WNUV was the formerly designated WB/CW station for Direct TV in the Lexington market.

WKYT regularly shows University of Kentucky Wildcats sports events which are popular in this market.

[edit] History

WKYT signed on September 30, 1957 as WKXP-TV, an independent station under ownership of Community Broadcast Partners; Frederic Gregg, Charles Wright and Harry Feingold, principals. In 1958, Taft Broadcasting Corporation purchased operating shares, changed calls to WKYT-TV and became an affiliate of ABC. Kentucky Central Television (Garvice D. Kincaid's) purchase of WKYT in 1967 brought a switch to full-time affiliation with the CBS Television Network. Prior to this, WKYT shared a secondary CBS affiliation with WLEX-TV. ABC secured a full-time affiliate in Lexington when the new WBLG-TV, channel 62 (now WTVQ-TV, channel 36) signed on in 1968.

In 1993, WKYT and WYMT were acquired by Gray Television.

Two years later, WKYT's digital signal on channel 13 was activated.

[edit] Programming

As a CBS affiliate, WKYT clears the entire CBS schedule in addition to its syndicated programming. But while most CBS affiliates air 'The Young and the Restless at 12:30 PM in the Eastern Time Zone, WKYT airs it at 9 AM instead. This, in part, owes to the fact that the Noon newscast airs for an entire hour; the 1 PM timeslot is filled in with syndicated programming, then resumes airing of the rest of the CBS Soap Operas at 1:30 PM.

[edit] Digital Programming

The station's digital channel is multiplexed:

Digital channels

Channel Programming
13.1 / 27.1 Main WKYT programming
13.2 / 27.2 CWKYT (CW Lexington)
13.3 / 27.3 27 Radar

  1. ^ An e-mail query from a Wikipedia member to WBKI Chief Operating Officer Carol LaFever led to news that, due to a condition of WBKI's affiliation agreement, that station must vacate the channel on Insight Lexington for CWKYT. WBKI can still be seen over the air in much of the Lexington DMA and on about 20 other cable systems in that market, but not on Insight in Lexington.
