WKNO is a PBS member station in Memphis, Tennessee, broadcasting locally on VHF channel 10.

The station is owned and operated by The Mid-South Public Communications Foundation, a non-profit organization governed by a board of trustees composed of volunteers. Unlike most of Tennessee's public TV outlets, WKNO has never had direct or indirect ties to state government, even though during its early years the station would mention on air "Tennessee Educational Television" during in-school hours and "Tennessee Public Television" during off-school hours, including prime-time.

[edit] History

WKNO signed on the air on June 25, 1956 as Tennessee's first public television outlet and is one of several community-supported stations in the U.S. still in continuous operation. Its studios were first located in midtown Memphis, but relocated to the south campus of Memphis State University (now University of Memphis) in the late 1970s. From 1968 through 1981, WLJT, channel 11, whose signal reached those portions of western Tennessee near the Tennessee River and the state line of Kentucky, repeated WKNO's signal, but afterward began broadcasting separate programming.

Recently, WKNO began digital broadcasting on channel 29.

WKNO/MSPCF also operates a small network of FM radio stations, affiliated with National Public Radio; see WKNO-FM.
