[edit] History
- Walsh Public School started out as a one room schoolhouse near the Walsh Cemetery just south of the current site.
- Walsh Public School's strictest principal was Mr. Donald Backus who ruled the school with an iron fist from the mid to late 1980s to 1996. During his first year in office, he disbanded the elementary school's wrestling team.[citation needed]
- During the same year, someone managed to delete the entire school computer network from a standalone portable (which no longer exists).[citation needed]
- Also established in the 1990s were the VIP program that teaches children about responsibility and peer pressure and the Quest program that teaches children about the teen years and social life in general during the students' high school years.
- In the year 1994, the entire school switched from archnet to ethernet which made network access faster to students who did not have to attend homeroom in a portable.
- During the start of the 1995-96 school year, the library was converted into an Internet lab where seventh grade and eighth grade students used it primarily for research with the supervision of the librarian or a nearby teacher.
- During the summer of 2002 an addition was added to the front of the school to hold the JK, SK and grade 1s that used to attend Lynedoch Public School. Lynedoch was shut down after the water system was damaged beyond repair.
[edit] Athletics
The name of the Walsh Public School athletic teams is the Whirlwinds. The school competes in basketball, baseball, soccer, and track and field.
[edit] Nature walkway
Established in the year 1995, Walsh Public School has a special walkway in the primary/junior end of the schoolyard where visitors and students who are supervised by their teachers can view nature. It is for classroom purposes only and is considered out of bounds during recess.
[edit] Earn Backs
Walsh PS now uses the earn back system instead of detention.
[edit] Special education scandal
During the mid 1990s, children from the special education classroom were herded like cattle and were forced to be experimented on with facilitated communication, which forced the students to say stuff they didn't want to say. One student's mother complained to the Norfolk Board of Education after her son was forced to use the facilitated communications board for more than an hour. Subsequently, faciliated communication was dropped throughout the entire school board.[citation needed]
