[edit] Bedford Park, Bronx, New York

Hi Daniel. Thanks for joining Wikipedia. Bedford Park, Bronx, New York is an excellent article, all the more impressive since it's your first effort.

You might want to take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City (and the associated talk page). A bunch of us New Yorkers hang out there once in a while to talk about improving the Wikipedia coverage of all things New York. We'd love to have you join us.

One issue that's worth bringing up is naming of articles. There's been some debate about how to best name articles about neighborhoods and other geographic areas. One school of thought is that "Bedford Park, New York" would be the right name for an article about a town or city named Bedford Park in New York State, but that for the Bedford Park neighborhood, a better name would be "Bedford Park (Bronx)". I've slowly been coming around to agree that the "neighborhood (borough)" style is the better one.

Again, thanks for getting involved, and welcome to Wikipedia! --RoySmith 12:37, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello, I'm the author of the article on Norwood. Greetings from across Mosholu Parkway! As you can see from there and from what I updated on Bedford Park, I've been applying the demography template from US cities to New York neighborhoods, with a bit of more detailed flavor. I would be interested in creating a general NYC neighborhood template and am currently considering various free mapping sources, perhaps the NYC map portal Satyadasa 23:19, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Indonesian related articles

Hey Daniel, thanks for your message. I'll help anyway I can but my specialism is about Old Javanese literature. Furthermore I am interested in (Austronesian) linguistics. Meursault2004 28 June 2005 09:21 (UTC)

Daniel, I'm glad that somebody is interested in putting in a broad effort to improve the Indonesia-related articles. Let me instead use this to list potential and known pitfalls, many of which directly address the issues that you had brought up:

  • Any article on Indonesian Politics is bound to be Java-centric. The simple reason is that the largest mass of population, wealth, and resources are in Java. Pramoedya Ananta Toer was known to have suggested that the capital be moved out of Java, but of course this never happened.
  • Indonesian nationalism is also dominated by ideas proposed and promoted by people from Java. It is known that many people in other regions of Indonesia (such as West Papua, Ambon, Aceh, etc.) do not share the views espoused by politicians in Jakarta. Throughout the history of Indonesia as an independent nation there have been many separatist movements in various regions.
  • As a corollary to the above, there are many independence-minded groups among the various ethnic communities of Indonesia who lived in Java even in the early 20-th century. Many of these people were the beneficiaries of the western education that had been made available to Indonesians I know very little about these groups other than their names (Jong Celebes for people from Sulawesi, Jong Ambon for people from Ambon, and so on), but one has to wonder whether (a) these groups, or the activists from these groups, became involved in what became the Indonesian government, and how, and (b) whether they represent the real aspirations of the people whom they represent. The examples are many, especially if you look at the failed PRRI rebellion in Sulawesi in the 1950s, which was supported by Eisenhower. Many of the leaders were Indonesian politicians.

In general though, I think the most urgent action is to expand a few articles which can be used as gateways:

Anyways, this is already a handful of comments, so let's get a discussion started! Julius.kusuma 28 June 2005 12:55 (UTC)

[edit] Noticeboards

Hi, you're welcome to establish a notice board for any country or region of the world. Just make the page and then tell people whom you think would be interested. =) -- ran (talk) June 28, 2005 23:42 (UTC)

Just to expand on that... we Wikipedians try not to be a bureaucracy. If you have a good idea, just do it. You don't have to ask permission. Imitating what others have done is a good way to start, but you don't have to. If you make mistakes in the process, it's no big deal; people can help you out. That's what collaborative editing is all about. Welcome to Wikipedia! Isomorphic 29 June 2005 04:28 (UTC)

Hi - Thought you'd like to know that I've just created Indonesia-stub and its associated category - feel free to use it any time! [edit] Suharto

Reckon if you want to do 65/66, thats a big art alone - if you know cribb/'s book and the cornell side on this that's just a long one alone. Ibu Tien and Mbak Tutut deserve separate entries, and Suharto's "use of Javanese tradition" is an art alone. Then if you look at treatment of dissidents during his reign, then that's another (I just feel tired thinking of what that would entail on the keyboard) specially if you know the tapol bulletin that used to come out from the uk. I do think there's a need for separate articles, and these dont even touch the pki or other issues again!vcxlor 08:12, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Good to see that you mainly get positive responses to your "civil war" business, I think after a month or so of not even bothering to discuss any further the title with you, I have found something http://members.aol.com/intwg/antiprocess.htm which might reach the impossibility of relating to you on the subject. Remember one day someone is going to come along and edit your 'pet projects' and you will have to deal with them in a less 'possessive manner' than you did with me! Remember the intros to wiki that specifically point out that the articles are 'not yours' alone. Enjoy peace while you can! Best Wishes.SatuSuro 14:23, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
I think you've missed the point again. After your defensive response on Mersault's talk page, I simply walked away from the issue, as it is quite clear you are too vigorous in your own self defense rather than listening to others. When I found the antiprocess page I thought, perhaps that's the problem. And you consider it rude for me to point out the 'possessiveness' of your stance with the articles you have written? Any luck and you will find that there are very few people who will want to change your articles. :)

My very original point, just in case it is lost, is that locals - Javanese and Indonesians would not immediately know what you are writing about, as it was _never_ identified as such. Then elsewhere you make a point about the prevalence of outsiders views of writing Indonesian history.(!) Anyways, I am sure you will get many credos for your hard work, and it _is_ all excellent work, I am not in any way criticising your efforts, just your enthusiasm for defending your choice of an innapropriate title. I am not following up any of this in any way, and this is the last of my comments, as I have quite considerable personal issues that severely limit my presence on wiki for over three months or more. Once again best wishes, salaam.SatuSuro 00:56, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Just to contradict my last statement, the point you make about available re-directs does in fact in effect solve the whole problem!! Sorry, I hadnt tried to see what redirects had been put in.  :)

At the time of the first interaction, I thought I was about to get into a fairly massive and comprehensive article writing about central java, as I had an issue about fieldwork that I was doing there years ago, and apart from promising cdc and others that I would get into massive article writing about sacred sites of central java and so on. In _that_ frame of mind I was quite concerned that quite a lot of articles about indonesia seemed at that time to be very limited. However now that I am effectively dropping out of active wiki work for quite a while, It doesnt matter. :) SatuSuro 05:48, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Indonesia/East Indies military history

Hi Dan. Indonesian Civil War is a good article, which far exceeds my knowledge of the subject. As far as WW2 goes, the web resources are seriously lacking, and I have found this to be the main obstacle to work on the land battles of 1941-42 in the NEI. ABDACOM and the sea battles are fairly well-covered by other sources. As you probably know, the major source, even though it is rather "Dutch-centric" and the English is not great, is http://www.geocities.com/dutcheastindies/ Grant65 (Talk) 04:25, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Indonesia during World War

Hi Daniel:

Grant65 mentioned that you are working on Indonesian historical topics. Recently I have updated the WW2 casualties page.[1] and have listed 4 million civilian dead in Indonesia during World War Two based on John Dowers - War Without Mercy that cited a UN report. Do you know of other sources on the topic? Four million civilian dead is a very serious statistic. --Berndd11222 03:48, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Template

{{User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/Antiracist}}

Hi, I made an edit and thought I'd tell you about it in case you don't agree or want to talk about it to a template you made: I think it's a very good idea but perhaps a link to Anti-Racist Action is more appropriate: as well as being a present-day organisation/people, Malcom X was a member of Nation of Islam, supporting a "separate black nation" - essentially apartheid.. (said this in the history too but I thought'd I'd post here so you know and stuff)

I hope you still like it, I have personally added it to my page: I agree very much with the sentiment just not the organisation linked to whom the person linked to was unfortunately a supporter :/

quote from the article about the org: "the time in history has arrived for the separation from the whites of this nation."

Louis Farrakhan, the leader, has also stated that "White people are potential humans…they haven’t evolved yet." (see again Nation of Islam article)

[edit] Anti-Saudi userbox

You expressed some concerns over the alteration to {{User against Saud}} - namely, "do you know, for a fact, that people who have run this userbox are willing to settle for merely "oppposing" the House of Saud, when they in fact they added the template to their Talk pages when it was written "support the overthrow"?" If users have concern that a userbox template might be altered after the fact, the best solution is to use the subst: command to include the entire code, rather than transcluding it. I have included below a slightly modified copy of the "overthrow" version (I replaced the logo with a PD flag to avoid copyright concerns on user pages). You can copy and paste the code on your user page if you want. That way, even if the template is deleted, you will still have the userbox on your page. [edit] Indonesian Civil War

Thank you for your message. Well I don't think it is a bad thing that you have been accused by a user to be possesive of the Soeharto (I consistenly spell this way :-)) and Indonesian Civil War. It just means that you care about these articles in particular and about the history of Indonesia in general. As for Soeharto actually I would like to see that the article is not too sided. Yes, Soeharto was an authoritarian ruler, but he was also a respectable leader of a country called Indonesia. (Not that I am accusing you of something). Perhaps you can also mention some good and charitable deeds he performed. It is as if 3/4 of my life goed down the drain if someone only mentions the misdeed of Soeharto and depicts him as a maniacal dictator.

Now as for the Indonesian Civil War, I indeed object the use of this title. This term is too heavy if you understand what I mean. Yes there were killings and mass murders but no warfare. It is unlike the Yugoslavian civil war or even the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Well I hope I have made clear my statements and thank you for having paying attention to the history of Indonesia. Meursault2004 21:47, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I'm hardly neutral

As I've been kicking and screaming about thie drama for ages. Have a look over my contributions if you'd like. Since I'm having no luck getting the "delete at all costs" crew to lighten up, I'll try with you a little bit.

  • Jimbo, the Board, the Arbitration Commitee, and the 330 or so moderate admins - none of them believe in "freedom of speech". The vast majority of editors who are contributing to the encyclopedia not only do not know about the userbox fracas, they don't care. This means that if this continues to spiral into increasing levels of nastiness, what will eventually happen is that everyone who's a "dissenter" will get blocked for a few months and the the very few "censors" will be less inclined to restrain themselves next time.
  • You're doing yourself no favours here. I neither know nor care about your personal story, but if you've never found yourself alone with several members of the police force and far from the door, try and imagine that you have. That's not the time for shooting of your mouth, or posturing, or calling people "honcho". It's the time to be as polite as possible, to think very cerfully about everything that you say, and to give no possible reason for anyone to lay into you with boots and clubs.

If you (and your cohort) actually want to affect change, then you must appeal to the moderates. You must demonstrate that you are contributing something to the discussion other than bluster. You will find very few admins as patient and tolerant as me, and every time I see someone throw sparks about "freedom of speech" and "censorship" I want to scream. A llittle bit more Ghandi, a bit less Tamil Tigers, is that so much to ask? And please don't say "we'll quit if they will" as the logical flaw with that is obvious. Show that you're the smart ones, make yourself a small target, and quit adding fuel to the fire.

[edit] ISBNs

just noticed your mention of ISBNs on your user page and wanted to ask you something. have you ever noticed that ISBNs can be totally useless at time? i recently had to get an astronomy textbook and the edition they sold at the bookstore had an ISBN which was nowhere to be found on the internet (after the bookstore sold out of the book and wasn't getting any more copies in). it took me about three weeks to sort through various ISBNs on the internet before i was able to order the right one. i think it was because there was a special printing of the book that only our campus bookstore (run by Barnes and Noble) had. don't worry about responding to this in a timely manner, just wondering if as a fellow college student you had ever had the same troubles i have had. thanks :-) Alhutch 04:09, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sukarno and Indonesian History articles

Hi, I notice the "politically corrected" version of history for Sukarno and the Republic of Indonesia government has crept back into Wikipedia. Hoping that you are not a student of the Rockefeller / Ford Foundation sponsored US universities; can I relay on yourself to see the fictional propaganda written by Sukarno & Legge is replaced with some actual academic work like CL Penders or Bernard Dahm ? Somebody even wrote that Sukarno was a "popular hero" before the war; I hope you are aware Bechetl and these other corporations are the same ones Mr Bush has been pushing his pro-Jakarta pro-TNI pro-nuclear agenda for since Jan/2001. Suggested US reading: http://fandom.net/InfoKit/Src/Nation/n1916-06-22.pdf http://fandom.net/InfoKit/Src/Nation/n1916-11-02.pdf http://fandom.net/InfoKit/Src/Nation/n1928-06-27.pdf http://fandom.net/InfoKit/Src/Nation/n1944-07-22.pdf http://www.fandom.net/InfoKit/Src/NYT/19500408ed.pdf http://www.fandom.net/InfoKit/Src/NYT/19500427moluccas.pdf

Chapter 1 of "THE WEST NEW GUINEA DEBACLE" - http://www.papuaweb.org/dlib/bk/penders2002/ "Sukarno and the Struggle For Indonesian Independence" -Dahm, Bernhard

I know it comes as a shock to many Americans, but Noam Chomsky really has been telling the truth about the Republic of Indonesia being created by corporate America. Same reason it is still covering up for the genocide in West Papua, see http://fandom.net

I appreciate these kinds of resources are not commonly promoted in most universities, but I hope you can and will be fair to the people of 'Indonesia' and update the Wikipedia with a truthful telling of how the Republic of Indonesia and Generals came to power.58.107.10.36 12:31, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
