[edit] Introductions

Dtasripin is short for Daniel Tasripin.

At present, residing in New York City, in the neighborhood of Bedford Park in the borough of The Bronx. I'm of mixed race: white-ethnic Americans (Jewish and French) on the mother's side and half Asian (Indonesian) on the other.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Hunter College of the City University of New York. I am finishing up a degree in Political Science, with a minor in Urban Studies. I'm an employee a union that shall go unnamed (you can ask me privately) and I'm also an occasional volunteer for the Indypendent (the newspaper put out by NYC Indymedia).

On Wikipedia, I mostly take an interest in editing articles related to 20th Century Indonesia and contemporary New York City, New York. You could say that on Wikipedia, I edit both locally and globally.

[edit] My Wikipedia-related interests

I would say a main goal of mine is to bring up the level of general scholarship and quality of articles related to Indonesia. It's one of the world's most populous countries, but (at least in the United States) one of the least well known.

To complicate matters, I have found that the truth is often surrounded by a bodyguard of lies, classified files, redacted memos, and bloody hands that have been washed. This is especially true of the period between the mid 1960s and early 1990s. Part of my hope, with Wikipedia, is having the historical lies and half-truths of the Suharto-era finally put to rest with the full truth coming out the winner.

This being the year (2005-06) which marks the 40th anniversaries of Suharto's various acts of butchery, that killed some 80,000-1,000,000 of his own people and started his dictatorial rule - I would hope that greater knowledge of what happened would persaude people to take a look at one of the 20th century's forgotten madmen.

On my other interest, contemporary New York - since I keep getting bugged by people on Mickey Mouse blogs - I'll keep my politics up front. I'm an unrepentant leftist, registered Democrat, but I don't get myself hung up too much on electoral politics.

One thing I hold on to, and that is (even though I think he was a messed up S.O.B.) the bit of truth in the late Sen. Daniel Moynihan's maxim: "Everyone's entitled to his own opinions, but not his own facts." I stick to NPOV, mostly because I think the truth (warts and all) is all the propaganda a good political cause should ever need.

[edit] Non-Wikipedia schtuff

My online time not spent pouring over research for Wikipedia entries is mostly spent either launching polemics or just cracking wise over on Plastic.com. User name is Clandestino. My karma's currently around the 1050 mark.

Offline, I'm mostly reading the novels of Pramoedya Ananta Toer and Naguib Mahfouz, or stuff on urban planning and politics.

[edit] Thought-Provoking Books

[edit] Stimulating Periodicals

A listing of books I've found interesting, and think are worth reading (or re-reading). Individual books are listed with their ISBN; click it and you should be able to find it up on your university or public library's index, or you can look it up to buy it at your online bookstore of choice (all this thanks to Wikification of ISBNs). Of course, ISBN only identifies specific editions of books; you can always just cut-and-paste author and title to plug into a search engine.

A TOTALLY DISCLAIMER TYPE THING, DUDE: My listing a book here does not mean I necessarily endorse all the views of either the book's author or its text. It just means I found the book interesting.

A listing of alt-periodicals, journals, etc. upon which I can always rely to have something interesting. I list them here with their International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), which has yet to be as useful as ISBN, but which nevertheless may help in a library search. By the way, TOTALLY DISCLAIMER TYPE THING applies here as well.
