[edit] Story Line

The game takes place in the final months of the two-year gap presented in Jak II, between the moment when Jak is taken prisoner by the Krimzon Guard and the time in which Daxter finally rescues him. It begins inside a bar, where Daxter is bragging to the patrons about his so-called "adventures". Of course, this leaves very little impression on his audience, except for an old man named Osmo, head of the Kritter Ridder Extermination Company, who sees Daxter's potential and offers him a job as an exterminator. Daxter refuses the job and the old man tricks him into the job and the game begins. The game sees Daxter completing various jobs throughout some of the city (Due to the memory size of the games UMD, only a small section of the main city and the city port are available to explore), including numerous strip mines, a distillery, a fish cannery, a construction site and a hotel. He must also complete many vehicle-related missions, all themed around the exterminating of bugs. The story progresses very little throughout most of the game, which has led to some criticism. Daxter does meet a handful of characters, though few of them give him more than a few objectives and tasks. However, in the last hour or so, the game fills in plenty of gaps in order to lead into Jak II, even throwing in some small twists for those familiar with the story of the next game.

[edit] Characters

Daxter The hero of the game, Daxter works for the Kritter Ridder Extermination Company as a part-time job. He is trying to save Jak, who is being held in prison.

[edit] New Characters

Osmo Owner of the Kritter Ridder Extermination Company (A company that has been in his family for generations), Daxter works for him exterminaton metal bugs in numerous places of Haven City.

Ximon Osmo's typically surfer-dude son, he also works for the Kritter Ridder Extermination Company, usually driving a big reen hover-truck.

Taryn A mysterous woman popping up throughout the game, she seems interested in destroying the metal bug swarms. She doesn't nescesarily like Daxter, but provides him with his bug sprayer and it's many upgrades.

Kaeden Metal Kor's right-hand man and large bug in disguise, he is sent to close down all extermination comanies in Haven City so the metal heads can attack. He is the game's main boss.

[edit] Returning Characters

Jak Seen only twice briefly, he is being experimented on with dark eco, and it is up to Daxter to save him.

Baron Praxis Ruler of Haven City, seen only in one small video, he overlooks the dark eco program.

Erol Head of the Baron's dark eco weapon's program, he was the one who captured Jak and experimented on him.

Count Veger Seen arguing with Erol over the weapon's program, he says that "Light eco is the key", the motivation for him to become a precursor in Jak 3.

Brutter A Lurker in Jak II, here he runs a fish cannery that Daxter must rid of metal bugs.

Metal Kor Seen in hologram form only, he wants all extermination companies in Haven City closed so he and the metal heads can take over.

Also, Jak, Kiera, Tess and Samos the Sage can be seen in the epilogue. Jak and Samos also appear in the game in mask form, as well as Daxter in human form, Ratchet, Clank and Sly Cooper.

[edit] Weapons

Due to his new job, Daxter is now equipped with an Electro-swatter, which acts as his melee weapon, and an extermination tank, which sprays bug spray (Which many have confused with Green Eco) to stun enemies. The tank also doubles as a type of jet-pack that allows Daxter to fly and eventually receives several modifications, including flamethrower capabilities and an ultrasonic attachment. Each new mod allows Daxter to hover higher and longer in jet-pack mode. With the ultra-sonic attachment, Daxter can shoot a ball of lightning resembling a grenade that causes high damage but uses a large portion of bug spray.

[edit] Dream Sequences and Rewards

Throughout the game Daxter collect precursor orbs which, upon collecting the required amount, unlock dream sequences. Here, Daxter takes part in fantisized battles that spoof popular films such as The Matrix and the The Lord of the Rings series. They consist of simple reaction minigames in which buttons must be pressed with correct timing to make Daxter fend off and defeat enemies. A list of the unlocked sequences can be found here:

1 Orb: Matrix sequence #1

100 Orbs: Braveheart sequence

200 Orbs: Lord Of The Rings sequence #1

300 Orbs: Indiana Jones sequence

400 Orbs: Matrix sequence #2

500 Orbs: Lord Of The Rings sequence #2

After completing each sequence, a secret is unlocked based on how well Daxter performs. A list of the secrets follows:

Matrix #1

  • Bronze: Spinning attack (new ability at Daxter's disposal)
  • Gold: Website Code #1 (if the codes are entered on the official site, they allow the player to access bonus media)

Braveheart

  • Bronze: Health Upgrade (permanently increase Daxter's health capacity)
  • Gold: Website Code #2

Lord Of The Rings #1

  • Bronze: Uppercut attack
  • Gold: Website Code #3

Matrix #2

  • Bronze: Health Upgrade
  • Gold: Website Code #4

Indiana Jones

  • Bronze: Body Slam
  • Gold: Indiana Jones hat (Daxter can wear the hat during gameplay)

Lord of the Rings #2

  • Bronze: Health Upgrade
  • Gold: Pants (Clothing for Daxter)

[edit] Unlockables

  • Indiana Jones-esque hat
  • Pants (Worn by Daxter at the end of Jak 3)
  • Masks
    • Jak
    • Human Daxter
    • Samos the Sage
    • Ratchet
    • Clank
    • Sly Cooper
  • Goggles (When activated, Daxter wears these on his eyes)
  • Jak X Scooter (A purple scooter with flame decals)

[edit] Trivia

  • The game connects with Jak X, allowing the player to unlock extras in both games. If connected Daxter can wear his goggles that are normally propped up on his head.
  • When Daxter receives the Electro-swatter, Osmo refers to it as "...A more elegant weapon, for a more civilized age...", the same line uttered by Obi-Wan Kenobi when he gives Luke Skywalker a lightsabre in Star Wars.
  • In this game, Daxter is 17 years old.
  • Many aspects in the game design is inaccurate with Jak II. Many places such as the bar, the Kritter Ridder Extermination Company HQ, the holes in the street and other levels such as the subway don't appear in Jak II. And because Jak II is literally set minutes after Daxter, there wouldn't be any time for these aspects to change.
  • One of the drawings in the concept art section of the game shows Daxter dressed similarly to Rambo, suggesting there might once have been a Rambo dream sequence.
  • The Website codes unlocked by achieving Gold in certain dream sequences can be used on the Daxter home page to unlock secret media.
