[edit] Biography

[edit] Early life

Baldwin was born on October 5, 1960 in Massapequa, the third of six children of a Long Island New York Catholic family. His father, Alexander Baldwin, was a hard charging high school history teacher and football coach who died of lung cancer at 55 in 1983. His mother, Carol (Martineau) Baldwin, is a breast cancer survivor and the founder of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center of the University Hospital and Medical Center at Stony Brook.

Baldwin is frequently noted as being Irish American, though his background includes English and Irish ancestry on his father's side, and distant French and Canadian ancestry on his mother's. His maternal grandmother was born in Nova Scotia and his Irish ancestry comes from his paternal great-grandmother, Helen Irene McNamara.[1]

In addition to his three famous actor brothers, Alec (born 1958), William (born 1963) and Stephen (born 1966), Baldwin has two sisters, Beth Baldwin Keuchler (born 1955), and Jane Baldwin Sasso (born 1965). Actor Joseph Baldwin is a cousin. Comedian Leslie Baldwin is a 3rd cousin.

[edit] Career

From 1993 to 1995, the 6'2" Baldwin was a regular on the cast of the television series Homicide: Life on the Street. Baldwin has also recently starred in the science fiction/mystery series Anonymous Rex, based on the novels of Eric Garcia.

In 2005, Baldwin was featured in VH1's Celebrity Fit Club, a reality show in which overweight celebrities compete to see who can shed the most pounds. He was the team captain of "The Eastsiders" which also featured rapper Biz Markie, plus-size model Mia Tyler, and actor Joe Gannascoli (later traded for Judge Mabelean Ephriam from Divorce Court. Baldwin was known for devising crafty schemes to sabotage the weight-loss efforts of the members of the opposing team, "Ralphie's Angels," later "the FB." Celebrity Fit Club also showed that Baldwin had a major substance abuse problem when he showed up late for the 6th weigh-in, in an agressive and disoriented state. He later apologized and was allowed to remain captain, although he lost some respect from fellow contestants. Four weeks later, Daniel failed to appear for the shows finale episode, losing his team the show. He was tracked down two months later confessing all. He lost 28 pounds whilst on the show.

A one-time sports handicapper, Baldwin is divorced from Cheryl Baldwin (whom he met in high school), by whom he had a daughter, Kahlea (born 1983). In 1990 he married actress Elizabeth Baldwin and they had two daughters (one of whom, Alexandra, was born 1994), before separating in 1992. They divorced in 1996.

Since 1994 he has been involved with his Homicide: Life on the Street co-star, Isabella Hofmann, by whom he has a son, Atticus (born prematurely on July 13, 1996 and reportedly named after the "Atticus Finch" character in To Kill a Mockingbird).

On April 22, 2006, Baldwin was arrested after police received a call that a woman had been threatened at the Ocean Park Motel in Santa Monica.[2] Entertainment media site TMZ reports that police uncovered drug paraphernalia and a small amount of cocaine in the $75-a-night motel room, and arrested two men, one of whom was Baldwin. Bail was set at $10,000. Authorities have since declined to press charges.

Baldwin was arrested on July 19, 2006, after he crashed his Ford Thunderbird into two cars parked on a Los Angeles street. According to the police, Baldwin ran a red light after weaving through the traffic in West LA just before 1 pm. He then crashed his rented Ford Thunderbird into two parked cars while going 80 mph in a 35 mph zone. Jason Lee, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles police, said "The Thunderbird pushed one of the vehicles about 20 feet, and that was a Hummer." Police say Baldwin was driving with a suspended license, at the time of the crash. He was transferred to UCLA Medical Center with back and neck injuries, but did not appear to be seriously hurt. [3]

In 2006, rock band Ded Sexi released a song entitled "Lesser of the Baldwins." In August 2006, popular entertainment website www.TMZ.com referenced the Ded Sexi song in conjunction with an article on Baldwin.

On November 7, 2006, Baldwin was arrested in Santa Monica, CA, after allegedly stealing a white GMC Yukon SUV, according to TMZ.com. The actor was taken to jail and booked for investigation of grand theft auto. Bail was set at $20,000. "The car belongs to an acquaintance of Mr. Baldwin, but he had no permission to take it," said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County sheriff's department. Narcotics and drug paraphernalia, a black double-ended dildo and gay magazines were allegedly found in his motel room. [4][5]
